Standard SIM to Micro SIM

Old phone had a standard size SIM card and new phone has micro SIM card slot so is it possible to transfer what's on the standard size SIM card over to a new micro SIM card.

You can cut your larger SIM down to the micro size and use it in the new phone.

The new phone has a micro SIM slot so I want to transfer the data from the old standard size SIM to the new Micro SIM card.

put the data onto the old phones memory

put the new sim +adapter in old phone. transfer data across to the new Sim that way

What data? No phones store SMS on the SIM anymore, and if you're using them to keep contacts, you're doing it wrong.

What I basically want to do is keep the same mobile number on my new phone and transfer any contacts or whatever else ended up on the old phone's SIM card, which was a standard size SIM card, to the new phone's micro SIM card.

Well whoever supplies your coverage will sort out the number thing, you just ask them for a new SIM and it will be tied to your account.

All you need is a pair of scissors and a template of a micro sim so you can cut it to size

First thing check that all contacts have been stored on sim. Years ago I had a phone where you could choose where the (new) contact was stored. The phone on its internal memory or the sim. You could go back and check each contact as to where it was.
