Apologies in advance for my lack of techno knowledge and understanding, I wondered if anyone can help with my query, which is as follows.
For the last few days my TV continually freezes, and displays the following error message:-
No video 642.000 MHZ
The remote control will not work, and the only way I can get the TV to work again is by switching both the TV and Freeview digital box at the mains.
Can anybody help?
Many thanks

Assuming your TV reception is terrestrial (aerial), it sounds like you have a signal drop-out problem. 642MHz is a frequency halfway between UHF channels 42 & 43 so it sounds like one of those channels is carrying the channel you were watching at the time.
First thing to do is to check all aerial cables including the 'patch lead' from the wall. There, the poor quality plugs we have to use need to be checked too (the most important part is to ensure no strands from the screening are making contact with the centre core).
Then, try a 'new installation channel scan' (or some similar phrase on your STB software) to re-load all the channels.Time has moved on (much quicker than it used to - or so it seems at my age) and my previous advice on residential telephony has been or is now gradually being overtaken by changes in the retail market. Hence, I have now deleted links to my previous 'pearls of wisdom'. I sincerely hope they helped save some of you money.0 -
Find the signal meter screen (Menu , Tuning, Technical Information) Jiggling the cable usually shows up bad contact issues.0

Good news is that it doesn't seem to be your TV. Is this happening during bad weather by any chance? Might indicate that your aerial is just about getting a good enough signal in good conditions. Maybe a new aerial needed, maybe the current one isn't pointing in exactly the right direction...0

I would guess that the message is coming from your STB. If this is correct, I'm surprised that you have to power-cycle the TV as well as the box to clear it.Are you for real? - Glass Half Empty??

Thanks everyone for your helpful replies.
Have re-tuned via the factory default setting, but still no joy, and so the next route will be an inside aerial. Silly question, but does it necessary follow that the most expensive aerial will necessary get the best reception?

We have one like the Telecam here http://www.argos.co.uk/static/Browse/ID72/33015381/c_1/1%7Ccategory_root%7CTechnology%7C33006169/c_2/2%7C33006169%7CTelevisions+and+accessories%7C33008651/c_3/3%7Ccat_33008651%7CTV+aerials%2C+boosters+and+accessories%7C33015381/q/tv+aerial.htm?tx=true&SEARCH_METADATA=uk.co.argos.ecommerce.search.util.SearchMetadata%4059895989 and did buy from Argos. (You can take it back , if not suitable.)
We bought the model with an amplifier, for use in the caravan, but, instead, it's used for the small upstairs tv. It gives a very good picture, even on the large tv, without even using the amplifier.
However, we are only about 5 miles from a transmitter.0 -
Many thanks Teddysmum.
How can you find out how far you are from your nearest transmitter?

Pointing your aerial in the right direction is the most important part. Go outside and look for aerials on your neighbours' rooves. Copy that, then fine tune it by seeing how good the picture is with some fine adjustment.0
