  • Yes...I am entirely dependant on benefits - after years of working full-time, part-time and voluntarily.

I was born with a number of disabilities and worked for many years despite this - Not all benefits claimants are work-shy scroungers!

It is true I no longer work - my disabilities worsened to the point when work is no longer possible - something I fought like mad! I now live in sheltered housing as I need extra support - but am determined to keep my independence as long as possible.

Yes, I donate regularly to food banks. ...but within my means....a jar of 'value' coffee and a packet of 'value' biscuits costs less than £1 but can make a struggling family feel a little more 'normal' in a crappy situation as they have a cuppa and a biccie.

I do not have a widescreen TV....I do not have pay-for-view TV....I have a bottom-of-the-range mobile on a £5 a month contract....I do not own games consoles and the latest games (oh wait....I have a second hand Nintendo DS given to me a few years ago!)....I do not smoke...I rarely drink....It is hardly a cushy life on benefits.

But there are people who do not want to believe this. They want to believe the Daily Mail, the Channel 5 'documentaries', the government -approved bile. It is much more comfortable for them to see all benefits claimants as lazy scroungers living in luxury at tax-payers expense....rather than opening their eyes and seeing benefits life as it really is. After all, if they did this then their conscience might be pricked and they might actually have to DO something about it!

If anyone really believes that my life is easy and I have overly-generous benefits....then swap with me! Take my disabilities.....take the daily meds - with the various side-effects....give up your independence before you are 50 ....live off benefits and see how much you are left with after topping up your rent and council tax benefits and paying your bills........in return I will gladly have your health, the chance to work again and regain independence and self-esteem.......

Well said . I read some of these threads and though I like to think I am not naive ,it still surprises me how mean -spirited,petty minded and in most cases ill-informed some people really are.

You take offence where non was intended, I merely pointed out that even being entirely dependent on benefits, you still have money to use on donations to food banks, either benefits are over generous ( you stated they were not), or you are going without yourself.
It is a strange state of affairs when taxpayers money is provided to one needy claimant, only for them to decide to give it away.
So which is it ? Do you receive generous amounts of benefit, or are you foregoing stuff/services to help others?

    Come on, that's a little unfair! :(

I'd give my last penny to someone that hasn't got a penny of their own.

Oh come on be fair that's the sensible thing to do before making a judgemental comment! :rotfl:
  • I will be donating to a food bank this Christmas, a couple of quid spent on bags of pasta and a tin of biscuits isn't going to break the bank for me but might mean a lot to someone else.
Yes, I'm aware that my donations might end up going to someone who doesn't really need it and is abusing the system, (although I find it hard to believe that many people are so eager to blag value pasta and kidney beans that they will fraudulently claim poverty) but there is a good chance it will go to someone in desperate need of it.
I will also be buying some cat food to put in to the cats protection league collection boxes in Tesco.

    Thats up to you.
Poor people, and I assume that includes benefit recipients, should look after themselves, there is very little real need for food banks.

If their wasn't a need for them, they wouldn't exist.

It's abhorrent that they have to exist.

I'll be donating to food banks a little more than normal over Christmas, and will also be giving blankets and food to a pet shelter.

    I've been Money Tipped!
I'm there collecting tomorrow for a couple of hours.

If you are going to donate, PLEASE BUY HEAVY STUFF - Tesco donation is based on collected weight, so buy heavy UHT milk over light boxes of cereal.

I'm taking my 8 year old and 10 year old with, who will be collecting too.

My only beef is that it is in Tesco - I can get so much more food in Aldi for the same money, so will be sneaking a few Aldi products into the Tesco collection point for weighing.
Who made hogs and dogs and frogs?
