the cost of christmas school concert.

The time has arrived when my girls have brought home what can only be described as a precise dress code for specific parts they are to play in the Christmas concert, they are doing a spin-off of the film Oliver.


Dress code as requested for DD 1:
Dark blue velvet jacket, Grey waist cost, blue button shirt, grey ankle length skirt, white waiste apron, white socks, and Daps, a mop hat, finger tipless grey gloves


for another scene: grey button shirt, grey waist coat, black trousers (cut to calf length and has to appear torn and disheveled) red sock and blue sock, dai cap, black daps.


Dress code for DD 2:
Black/darkblue velvet jacket, black waist coat, white button shirt, grey ankle length skirt, red or white waist apron, black or red
socks, black daps, mop hat, finger tipless red gloves.




I've just done 1 hour on the interballs of searching for the cheapest and nastiest stuff to try and get for this 1 time use clothing, and the cheapest for both came to £55.99 each without the post price and some of this clothing I have already!!
the dearest being the dark blue/black velvet childs jackets at £19,99 each for their size!!
this in my opinion is an unreasonable amount to pay out for a Christmas concert, shall I contact the school and explain that I cannot afford to shell out over £100.00 for these items?

i'll have to check with the school tomorrow the lines a closed now so cant get hold of a human being to talk to.


my wife will check charity shops, but finding blue and black childs velvet jackets is in my opinion going to be like finding needle in haystack.

Unless your daughters are at stage school and are putting on a semi-professional production I would be sending them in with any clothes that vaguely fit the general descriptions, to give out lists of clothes in specific colours and styles is IMO a ridiculous request for a school concert.

I'm not sure what this spin off is about, they have specified colours so no street urchin is in the same colors and look alike I suppose.


I supposed the velvet jacket idea is specific to the school choir, that is an assumption and not a said and done confirmation.


the schools spin offs of films and plays are quite a comedic event and always funny. so it wouldn't surprise me if dickens is a role reversal of some type in the play.


my children in this play are both 10 (twins:eek:) this will be the last christmas concert for them in primary! (OMG seems only yesterday they were born)

Wow, that is a very specific list! I would ring the school and be quite open that it's a problem.

I thought most costumes were rough makes or from charity shops, anyway.

TBH I think the thought behind this is that the school knows it their last concert in the school, and maybe the last they will have (as some secondary schools has the drama club do the production) so want it to be glam and big, but this all comes at a cost to us the parent.


ill have to inform the school tomorrow that this isn't something I'm prepared to invest £100 for a 1 time thing.

Good grief as if this time of year isn't expensive enough !!

Call the school in the morning and ask them if they'd like you to perform a Hand Stand - while they sit and watch the money falling out of your pockets .. The cheek of it .
