This is true, but a charge of around £40 can be made for such a mistake (assuming it's not deemed to be deliberate), if the ticket is not valid at the location the passenger actually travels to.

This can be mitigated against (within the Oyster PAYG area only) by ensuring that a Travelcard is held on Oyster, and that you are touched in, and that you hold sufficient credit for a PAYG charge (though no charge would actually be made if you correct your mistake reasonably).

lol, I’m pretty sure yorkie2 has accurate information and isn’t guessing (even if he isn’t giving you the answer you want to hear)

how many stops are you hypothetically ‘forgetting’ to get off from, and how often is this likely to happen?

[and yes, I have an an annual travelcard for 15 years and use it hundreds of times a year; and yes, I've napped and occassionally missed my stop and had to travel back one or overshot a stop or two - never an entire zone!]

[QUOTE=adindas;67120931...... There are various reasons for instance sleeping, chatting with colleagues, reading on the train, listening music, playing game, texting, making a phone call, etc....
    ... ...[/QUOTE]

People that do this clearly haven't sorted out their priorities. Most people are able to multi-task, and those that can't are recommended not to do any of the above.
The questions that get the best answers are the questions that give most detail....

If you touch in there is no concept of overshooting. But those with travelcards don't need to touch in as a rule unless they are planning to go outside the validity of their travelcard?

If you are checked by an inspector and hold a valid Travelcard for the zone(s) your journey involves, that's not a problem.

But if you are found to hold a Travelcard that does not cover the zone(s) your journey involves, and you have not touched in (or have insufficient PAYG balance), you will either be charged a Penalty Fare (if it is deemed an honest mistake) or reported for prosecution (if deliberate fare evasion is suspected), which would result in a criminal record if found guilty.
