Having a dog, I need to go out everyday come rain or shine which is great for stopping me being lazy. Now I work from home I can do a walk at midday on the very short days, instead of the evening, so always get my little bit of Vit D! I do have a rechargeable headtorch though if I need to go out in the dark for some reason.Wednesday2000 said:I just read through the Frugal but happy in winter thread on the first page.:) I don't like it when it is very cold, but I do like autumn and winter in general as it feels very cosy to be inside with fairy lights, hot drinks and warm blankets. I am going to make sure I keep up going for a walk every day despite the weather as I can often get the winter blues once the days get darker.Live the good life where you have been planted.

What type of dog do you have? I have a JRT, a rescue who needs a lot of attention. She prefers playing a vigorous game of fetch to walks and I usually play fetch with her three times a day.:) Some women I talk to online in the US use those headtorches, they are a good idea.Elisheba said:

I bought some fluffy slippers for myself yesterday along with a teddy bear for my dog and I realised she had taken them all as she thought they were all toys for her!

I moved to dresses a few years ago - bought lots of lovely vintage style ones, and wore tights and slips in winter. Then I a got a dog who has behavioral issues and he jumps up a lot, and also going on walks my legs would get scratched by brambles and things, and then last winter I wanted to keep the heating off as much as possible and tights and slips just were not keeping me warm, so altogether I have had to go back to leggings and trousers in the main. I'm in the middle of selling lots of my dresses now and just keeping a few for occasions as they weren't practical and weren't getting worn. I have no idea how women in the olden days coped with wearing dresses and skirts all the time - I just didn't find it practical in a cold house, or with a dog.2Scratters said:
I have chosen to move to dresses during the year in a style I have always loved, recently purchased some full- length slips to assist my layering without bulk, this also saves on washing.

@Elisheba - they didn't wear tights
I wear various kinds of non-nylon stockings and long socks, some hand-knitted, others machine-knitted, and I go foraging through all kinds of undergrowth with no trouble
And lovely and warm too - instead of synthetic slips, most of which fabrics conduct warmth out of the body, I wear petticoats made of either natural fibres or viscose, which insulate beautifully.
I don't "dress vintage-style" but my clothes are fairly old-fashioned and *very* much more comfortable and practical as a result!2025 remaining: 37 coupons from 66:

Yellow Labrador Retriever. I got him at 15 months, and he's almost 4 now but I haven't managed to iron out some of his behavioral issuesWednesday2000 said:

. No cushions left downstairs, and blankets can also get chewed. Still he's lovely and I wouldn't be without him - and I'd rather have him than a pretty house. Live the good life where you have been planted.

Ah, stockings then. No idea how they managed with them full stop - although my old boss swore by them. I don't think I could wear them - not without bloomers anyway - my thigh rub would be hideous. And not at all during the war and for a few years afterwards certainly, unless you were friendly with an American servicemanLaura_Elsewhere said:@Elisheba - they didn't wear tights

My shins are too big for long socks, although I did see Snag has started doing thigh high cable knit socks in bigger sizes. Although at £26 that's a bit steep for me. I'm afraid another thing I can;'t do since my dog arrived is knit or crochet (not that I can crochet but I would like to learn) - he thinks all the balls of yarn are toys! So no hand knitted socks for me either. My slips are nylon - perhaps that's one of the places I went wrong then?Live the good life where you have been planted.

@Elisheba my gran was always knitting or crocheting… on train, boat, car etc. she had a round plastic ball with hole for the thread to come out and a ribbon loop to loop over her wrist. Tho I guess a plastic ball might still be tempting!
a small light handbag might work to contain the wool and keep it close to you though?working on clearing the clutterDo I want the stuff or the space?6 -
Ooooh, now I'm wondering.... If I could find something he wouldn't try and play with for the yarn to come out of... I'll have to have a think. When I was trying to teach myself to crochet I worked out I could have a few feet of yarn before he started playing with it. It would need to be a bag that zipped shut or something like that, because he's been known to open ottoman type boxes to get into them if yarn is in there.newlywed said:@Elisheba my gran was always knitting or crocheting… on train, boat, car etc. she had a round plastic ball with hole for the thread to come out and a ribbon loop to loop over her wrist.
