My DH uses a CPAP machine at night as he has severe sleep apnoea and as such we are on the essential users list but because he has a very good understanding of electrics he's actually made a battery box up that can power his CPAP machine (for around 5 nights), its a relief to have the back up because if he wasn't able to use it, he'd either be dead from lack of oxygen or smothering due to the level of snoring (said in jest....maybe)

My father in law had an electric recliner chair and fell asleep in it one afternoon.  He woke up to find there had been a power cut and his chair wouldn’t work.  He was unable to get out of it under his own steam.  Fortunately he wasn’t stuck for too long

Thank for all the suggestions I have meds I have to take every morning but as I also take a bottle of cold water up to bed with me for a drink during the night I think I will keep some upstairs this winter 'just in case' 
My sofa can turn into a double bed as its got one built inside it so I may keep a pillow and a single duvet downstairs as well. in case it goes off, or better still I have just thought I have a single sleeping bag I can zip into if needed

haha it's happened to the best of us... i think i was about 20 when my grans broke with me lying in it... stuck with my legs in the air!

Oh thanks, I did read about the info about the installment payments, but some reason I didn't see if it said if it was means tested or not. I will look forward to getting it now.:)

Why dont you ask a more mobile friend/relative to test it for you? 

One day, turn the main fuse off to your house, then ask them to go up and down in the stairlift until it stops working, You; then know for sure how long it lasts after a power cut.

What a thoughtful lot of people on this site with suggestions which  may not have occurred to us.  The one hiccup  with temporarily removing a main fuse is that you may end up having to reset all your timers, or a burglar alarm.  Not a problem for some but in this house with a lot of electrical gadgets it's a bit of a hassle.

In fact, the OP said they sometimes accidentally unplug their stairlift when hoovering, so they wouldn't even need to mess about with fuses. Just unplug it and then perform the experiment as suggested. For best results make sure the friend is a similar weight as I expect this will affect the amount of energy needed, on the way up at least.
