prepareathome I knit all sorts, hats, socks and wrist warmers are staples for Christmas presents from me, and merino wool is a fave yarn of mine to use for warmth
I’d be happy to help a fellow knitter, just give a shout!

Long time lurker here! I’ve always been a prepper (thanks to my parents!) and have been doing a few things to ready us for winter
adding to my pantry stores every week, in case of bad weather or delivery issues
put a curtain up at our back door to block the drafts
closing doors to rooms we use, to keep the heat in them
winter kit in the car
blankets out by the sofa, and in bedrooms ready to snuggle under
rag rugs on the floors, and currently making a new one (trying a new skill!)
found more cashmere and wool clothing in charity shops, no more than £4 each!
xmas and birthday presents sourced from sales/Facebook/second hand shops
big Roll of brown paper to last us wrapping until the end days
heating on 19°c max
radiators checked for cold spots
summer stuff vacuum packed and stored, winter stuff out
theres probably more, but that’s all I could think of to date!11 -

I can’t understand why either ?My prepping for winter has included
-re-waterproofing coat & trousers for dog walking (spray on nik wax bought in sale earlier in the year)
-New woolly hat £3. The old one from last year did not cover my ears & has been re-donated
-Scarf & gloves out of storage
-Checked we have a couple of cans of de-icer for cars (although I am still working from home so hopefully will not need it)
-Car will be going for it’s service next month
-Draught excluder tape on both poor fitting rear bedroom windows
-Winter duvet & throw on bed
-Furry throws out of storage for the sofas downstairs when it’s chilly
-closing the curtains as it starts to get dark to keep the heat in
The heating is still off here so far but luckily it has been unseasonably mild 17 degrees, so I keep having to throw the duvet off 😆 but it is forecast to drop to 12 degrees by the weekend.-Snow shovel in the shed just in case ⛄️ I bought it a couple of years ago when we had heavy snow and we have not had any settle since, just a few flakes 😆 We don’t get heavy snow often in the south, but I am prepared!-I am trying to batch cook & freeze portions and use the slow cooker more to save on energy costs.0% credit card £1360 & 0% Car Loan £7500 ~ paid in full JAN 2020 = NOW DEBT FREE 🤗

We still have the window wide open all night, although closed in daytime when My Intended is sitting all day working from home.
It's nearly November and I'm still not wearing jumpers! I love my layers and look forward to a frosty crisp morning but it looks like I'll have quite a wait - in 2020 our first frost was in mid-September...2025 remaining: 37 coupons from 66:

Laura_Elsewhere said:Socks are more difficult to track down cheaply - well, you know they aren't quick to make. But you could try the suppliers for historical re-enactment, who typically carry knee-high stockings which are beautifully warm and cosy, and some may carry more modern styles for eg WW2 Home Front or Land Army re-enactment groups.
I like the medium and the heavy weights of stockings from Quartermaster Stores (google!), although be wary of the top edges being a bit tight if you have wide calves or plump thighs. They are £14-16 a pair and are quite happy in the washing-machine with my other woollens on the cold-water 'rinse' cycle with its 1400rpm spin!I've just spent the last 15 minutes looking at the things on QStores...I could quite easily buy loads for my DP from there and he would be a happy bunnyBut I've resisted so far!
With the mild weather continuing here I've popped on some washing so I can put the airer outside (no space for a washing line in the garden, but can pop the airer on the paved bit outside the door). I figure any time drying outside is useful. I've also dug out some thin jumpers as starting to feel the cool in the early mornings and late evenings.Grocery budget in 2023 £2279.18/£2700Grocery budget in 2022 £2304.76/£2400Grocery budget in 2021 £2107.86/£2200Grocery budget in 2020 £2193.02/£2160Saving for Christmas 2023 #15 £ 90/ £3656 -
