I'm noticing a marked improvement in the house now the windows are all sealed and the kitchen door is replaced. The workmen also fixed the problem with the front door but we'll still get it replaced next year
There's now virtually no drafts so the house but in this heatwave it means the house is now much warmer than it used to be :rotfl:
Now I just need to get the decorating done and buy new blinds/door curtains where applicable, and a big rug for the kitchen floor.Creeping back in for accountability after falling off the wagon in 2016.Need to get back to old style in modern ways, watching the pennies and getting stuff done!0 -
Just booked the chimney sweep.
£130.00 for two chimneys (discount as 2) Is this reasonable? Not dim.....just living in soft focus

That cost for the chimney sweep seems a bit excessive to me! I pay £45.00 and he cleans my stove really well. He usually stays for a good hour. For two I would have thought it would have been closer to £80.00!
I would shop around and see if you can get a recommendation. Thats the best way!Cat, Dogs and the Horses are our fag and beer money:beer:

Our chimney sweep is £45 for one fireplace. (I had the other one closed up so it's just decorative now as we never ever used it)
I'm still debating whether or not to have it done this year - I don't actually use the fireplace for burning right now, as last time I tried, I could smell smoke in my bedroom upstairs, which concerned me, and I haven't lit anything in the fireplace since. I have an electric heater that looks like a wood burner in the fireplace right now.Saving, decluttering and doing alright.:xmastree: :xmastree:0 -
Love this thread
The winter preps I have done over the years since I first found this thread have saved me a lot of misery and money! Knowing we have meds in for when we need them, microwave rice and meals in tins/easy things for my children to heat up if I am poorly etc made such a difference.
For all those who remember, the papier mache repair job I did in the brickwork/hole where the sink waste came out of the wall causing a horrible draught, has held up very nicely. I think we may quite possibly be approaching our 4th or 5th year of this free, very effective repair!
I am going to empty my larder before winter and remove anything that cannot be salvaged and reorganise as it is a nightmare to find anything these days.
Kids will need new winter boots but coats should (fingers crossed) be ok for another year. They have plenty of sweatshirts/fleeces which will still fit so just bottoms to sort out.
Looking forward to hunkering down with you all. I love autumn0 -
Oh! My new knee high brogue style boots arrived today. They were an eBay bargain which I bought for a specific outfit to wear to the Steampunk weekend in Lincoln this year. They will be great for winter too as have good grip and fingers crossed will be water tight.
Going to be a pain breaking them in while it's so warm though!Vintage loving, allotment holding, low waste living. Indi = DH. Maisie Bones = fur baby
Credit Card paid off = 02/04/2018
Bank of Mum loan = £450
Now saving for a house deposit!0 -
I need to make a list for what I need to do/get.
I know I need to at least get a winter quilt, a winter coat, wellies, start to stock larder for winter and build my wardrobe up for winter.0 -
Had a ring round for more chimney sweep prices but that seems to be the going rate in this area
It has to be done for safety so will have to part with the loot.
Been to the park this pm and have noticed that the trees are heaving with conkers, rowan berries, crab apples and those little twirly seed casings (can't remember what they're called). The elderflowers are quite abundant and it looks like there will be a fair few blackberries in the perimeter hedge.
That'll be a few puddings sorted then
With the glorious weather the past couple of weeks, it seems a bit daft to be wondering whether we'll get a bad drawn out winter or just a couple of weeks of major inconvenience.
But because I've seen all the berries ,I am:rotfl:
Hey ho, we'll get what we getNot dim.....just living in soft focus

Hi,
Delurking to say I had two chimneys swept yesterday for £52.
He was only here for about 30 minutes. This is Notts/Derbys border area. I suppose all the sweeps in an area charge about the same.0 -

Would you mind posting the link for those boots please? They sound awesome! X0
