  • Thank you FUDDLE that will be perfect for the 'back of the sofa' throws. We're currently using some old threadbare ones we got when we lived in germany 22 years ago. They can be relegated to sitting in the garden on the lawn blankets and I'll treat us to a couple of lovely new real wool warm ones, Lyn xxx.

Been reminded of this thread today.

I've kept details of post 401 - as it seems pretty comprehensive.:T

The thing I am most aware of personally these days is the final paragraph - now that I've moved from an area where weather very rarely restricted my activities (and I couldn't understand why anyone would bother to consider it very much....:() to one where I "see what they mean":( I am aware of considering what I can and cant do to continue Living My Life throughout the year.

This has rather translated - to date - into going out and about more than normal when its Normal Weather and less than normal when it isn't and piling up a selection of books to read/tasks to do when its "Abnormal Weather" (according to my way of thinking).

I do get frustrated by it - but it is what it is and I'm buying up books to read that I fancy throughout the year and regarding the worse weather-times-of-the-year as when I catch up on reading those books/springcleaning/other "indoor" type activities and counterbalancing by going "out and about" more than normal when its a Normal Weather (imo) type time of year.

    ***********

I would be interested to know how other people cope when moving from an area where they barely take the "weather" into account when planning their lives into one where the "weather" does have a disruptive impact on their lives at pretty frequent intervals.

Have you also started stocking up with things to do when the weather disrupts your plans for the day/shopping?

Re other aspects of the weather - and I am simply not used to Wind:(:( - but its frequent where I am and I don't know how to cope with it. I'm used to just dressing for the temperature it "should" be at that time of year...but finding that if I go out dressed that way now its pretty frequent to find that Wind cutting right through my clothes and I'm feeling cold. How do people deal with the transition from all that Wind blowing around on the one hand v. times when they are heading off for the day to somewhere with a normal level of Wind (ie virtually zilch)?? I'm recalling there are jacket type things called "windcheaters" (think that's the word???) - but remembering they are a very different style to anything I ever wear and getting a bit puzzled as to how to deal with the weather here AND keep dressing My Way (basically smart casual) on the other hand. Any suggestions please?

I have had a new front door fitted as the other was looking very warn and scruffy and was also draughty. Getting the front windows replaced in the next few weeks as they are also clapped out, should help keep my home warmer in the winter.

I don't know about all the moving etc, but I do live on the side of a hill and the wind often sweeps down the valley here - I find even in warmer weather I sometimes need an anorak (I have a pretty pacamac) just to keep the wind off. It really helps.

  • Plans for this year are a tad stuffed as I'm trying to get a job back near my parent's place, so I have no idea where I'll be living come winter (I know where I HOPE I'll be living, but life is rarely that easy).

Of the few things I need to do, buying a winter coat is one of them. I don't know what the dry cleaners did, but the longer of my two coats (and therefore the one that helps keep my legs warm) now has giant holes in both pockets, so I can't store my keys, iPod or money in them. I might see if my Mum can patch them up, but if not then I'll have to look for a new one. Had a look on the Next clearance but couldn't see anything there.

I should also get a new jumper or hoodie as I'm currently stuffed if my main hoodie needs a wash.

Oh, also need to put my dressing gown in the washing machine at some point over the next few months. Might buy some new slippers as well.

I almost have a new bath & shower :D Just needs the bath panels fitting & the surrounding area made shower proof. Debating whether to get bathroom wallpaper or tiles, whichever I choose it won't be easy dealing with it due to the shape/condition of the walls :( This means in the winter, instead of having to whack the heating up due to having a bath, we can soon just jump in the shower which will warm the bathroom up, then jump again out quickly. I can't wait to have a full hair wash & body bath in less than 45 minutes due to waiting for the bath to fill then trying to get washed in a tiny bath. :D
Creeping back in for accountability after falling off the wagon in 2016.
Need to get back to old style in modern ways, watching the pennies and getting stuff done!

MTSTM I wonder if you have tried keeping an eye on real feel temperatures? I use it all the time on accuweather. For instance, just a few days ago the night time temperature here was 9 degrees but with the chill winds it dropped down to 3 degrees in real feel. It probably would give you a helpful indication.

I cracked on this morning and got my leather boots and ankle boots out as well as my shoes. I got all those polished, checked the heels to see if they needed to go to the cobblers (they don't) and then put them away ready for October. House smells of polish at the moment. Need to protect my suede boots and gloves now, but I shall get those done next week.

Just need to go through my coats to get those washed. I have a load in the machine at the moment of scarves (woollen) and a couple of jumpers and cardigans.

I am still using the Lakeland Limited wool wash and it's fab stuff. The lavender scent does a good job, stays for a very long time on the fabric and keeps the pesky moths at bay.

    Just checked it - thanks.

:( Now puzzled as to how the difference in real feel temperature can be as much as 11/12 (to the bad:() today between Home Area and here:cry:

No wonder I'm still in my winter dressing gown and slippers:cool:. My summer slippers and dressing gown still haven't seen the light of day yet this year.

Tries to think positive, ie "Well - I don't recall having any of my nights' sleep disturbed by being too hot since I moved....".

Have just discovered this page after lurking a while. Great ideas all round. Small suggestion of my own - a fleece blanket used on top of the bottom sheet (or instead of it). They're soft and cosy to the touch and when I did this by accident last year (ie forgot to put it underneath and couldn't be bothered remaking the bed!) I found out that it felt much, much warmer! It may be the type of fleece though - I found two which were definitely fleecy but "knitted" a bit like old fashioned baby blankets. The little holes seem to keep the heat in ...
    Looking ahead
