Is anyone managing to dry washing outside? It is dry and very cold, sunny but the temperature nose dives around 4pm. I am thinking of washing my flannelette bedding tomorrow, will give it more spinning at 2400 in my spin dryer and have it out by 9. This cold weather brings back memories of childhood, bringing the washing in when it was frozen stiff

I don't think washing will dry much at such low temperatures with no wind or sun. I,ve tried it but find in such conditions items dry better indoors hung up somewhere where they can get the benefit of any warm radiators, even if the central heating switches off after a morning burst.

I find hanging out large items like sheets is a waste of effort if you have to do it single handed and then end up quickly having to take them back in again so I opt for just putting them where they will dry the quickest.

I did get my flannelette sheets dry, eventually, part outside and then airing indoors, was quite a good result. Me and my sister were reminiscing the other day, how on earth mum got 8 sheets dry in winter in those days in the 50s, no wonder the mums breathed a sigh of relief when bri-nylon sheets were developed. Those days it was wash the bottom sheet, put top on the bottom and put a clean sheet on top. 8 beds to do. No wonder mums were generally slim

It has been a grim few days, fog , freezing and more fog, I am getting cabin fever, want to go out but don`t want to be clogging the roads without reason.

I am feeling the urge to get outside too. I had a little look down the garden yesterday. Nice to see bulbs coming through and buds appearing. Feeling the urge to turn the compost! Yes I know it's strange but I feel like I'm doing something to hurry Spring on! Sunny today so going to chance a load of washing and might just get that compost turned!

I,d be wary if disturbing that compost if it,s a heap of any sort, especially have a pond in the garden. You could well disturb hibernating frogs or toads who are not yet ready to wake up and spike them with your fork or spade. I,d leave it until the end of March to be on the safe side.

Its been so very nice outside for two days, sunny and calm but it is the calm before the very big storm coming soon. Anyone remember the Michael Fiah weather, when we got the hurricane, when roofs were blasted off houses. That is what we are expecting again so I`m not wasting any time and everything outside is well and truly battened down. A good way to batten is by using bags of compost, I bought 40 litre bags just for that.

My water butts were emptied in case we had severe frost but no sign of that and I have let them fill up again, so that they are safe in the wind. I`ll have a walk through tomorrow, make sure that nothing can blow around and break a window or worse. I hate wind

testing myself. I like the unfussy new styling and that thanks has gone. Hope I am logged in, no idea where my password is, have had to get a new one. Fingers crossed
  • Like pattypan4, I like the page layout and I'm testing to see if everything works okay.
  • I'm finding the new forum layout a bit difficult to get used to. Can anyone else see time & date posts were made? I can't (on a mobile browser) & it's a bit wierd not knowing if a post is new or old.
My walking plans have been abandoned this weekend. I may potter about tidying the garden & tying everything down.
