I use to have one Novice, so yes I know they are good, it's amazing how much water they can collect.

  • Still bitterly cold outdoors. The heating has been blasting away since 4pm, & probably won't click off til 8pm when the timer turns it off. Although, the boiler is in economy/condensing mode.

I'm quite pleased with the radiator foil panels I bought from Amzn. They're on my bedroom & lounge radiators & the walls behind them are cold to touch. The bit of wall behind the ends of the radiators is warm, so I guess they are doing something useful.

Does anyone have a fan on top of their stove? Worth the money or not?

Both my daughter and an old friend have fans on their stoves and both swear by them. I found the one in a small room to be rather difficult as I couldn't get it out of my line of vision and I am affected by things like this and migraine. My daughter's room is much bigger and I didn't have the same problem with it. In terms of distributing the heat they are really efficient.

  • Thanks LP. I had the stove on last night and it belts heat out into my small living room and even with the door wide open it did get too warm, it was just an initial thought but I am not going to need one after all but it was interesting

Duvet change last night, I wondered why I was a bit cool, even with my welsh blanket on top. At least we are unlikely to get sudden warm days for a few months

my stove is new to me in a brand new well insulated house but it is so cheerful to look at when on. I have been lighting it every day and use a mix of fuels, the aim is to get a fire that simmers and I believe I have achieved that. Last refill is at around 6pm, first lit around 3pm. I have noticed that the whole house is warmed, obviously warmest in the living room but the fabric of the building is consistently warm. The effects last all through the night. Upstairs is comfortable, still cool enough for sleeping but without that chill that gets through to the bones.

I am pretty sure I have enough fuel for what looks like a harsh winter, will perhaps get 2 more nets of kiln dried toorrow. I only use one log at the moment, it lights easily with my electric firelighter. The tightly scrunched paper on the base lights and burns well and quickly warms the air in the flue, which forces out the plug of cold air that can make smoke backflow into the room. Its quite a science, this lighting of a fire, so it draws without getting smoked out.

Winter stores are being built up today, before any rush and I have located my safe snow walking trainers, safe in a wardrobe
  • It's been a cold few day, & some snow has fallen in the wilder parts of the Peak District. First of this winter!

It's been pretty cold here for the past couple of days, so we've been lighting both our wood burning stoves (although still only had the central heating on three times ;)) to get the kitchen and snug really toasty. Despite the size/output of both stoves, the upstairs stays chilly but that's how we prefer it. Both kitchen (a large space with high ceiling) and snug get hot really quickly, although as we've not got around to fitting a cast iron radiator in the second reception room yet it'll be convector heaters all round when we eat our Christmas lunch in there.....

More firewood in the offing thanks to the recent storms as the second half of one of our huge beech trees came down. Once it's chopped and seasoned there'll be enough for at least one winter :D

Since DH finished the kitchen larder we've stocked up on loads of tinned/dried goods plus we have most of the food in for Christmas - except for the meat and vegetables etc - for the first time since we sold our last-but-one house we've got more kitchen storage than we actually need!

  • I can tell it is winter. I have at last felt like knitting :D . My cupboards and freezer are full to bursting and my tall larder fridge is full too. Two salad drawers at the bottom and both loaded, I am using lakeland green bags and they will keep the veg nice until after christmas and new year. I am most definitely ready to hibernate now, treats and nibbles in store and enough for meals for a long winter seige.

It is tipping down outside and I came home through some deep puddles earlier, I don`t think the ground will take much more water. I`ll be one of the lucky ones, safe at home and off the roads

I have gone through the honeymoon period with my stove, am comfortable lighting it now so am content to keep the house cosy with gas, easy, no cleaning
  • Months ago I bought a folding airer that can contort over the bath, sometimes I need to dry things flat but I found another use a few days ago. It does not slip on the floor and I unfolded it and it is like a ladder at an angle against a door. close to the dehumidifier and things dry quickly. It has been pouring and the minimum time in my tumbler is a long time, not worth it for undies and a nightie. I see that LL don`t sell it any more and it was in the sale, found it elsewhere. 10/10 from me, brilliant and versatile. I can be angled over the bath for drip dry
