Preparing for Winter V

Always good to prepare for winter, especially important to keep an eye on energy costs. One tip I have for those in listed properties or conservation areas who don't have double glazing, you could look at secondary glazing.0

A cold snap has arrived. Freezing overnight & lowest temp of -4c forecast for tomorrow night. It was getting chilly walking home at 5pm.
I'll be layering up on my walk to work tomorrow, & at least the cold means there's no rain.0 -
Here on the sunny south coast I was able to get to the new allotment today and continue making raised beds (this one to be ericaceous soil for blueberry bushes).
I haven't had the central heating on this year as I've been relying on snuggling down in front of the woodburner, and I haven't even put that on tonight. Must dash - on-line lesson to give. Definitely lighting it aftwerwards though..0 -
Damm blast and botheration! Heating packed in, not able to get it going again, so early night and plumber will be getting a call in the morning.£71.93/ £180.000

two things to try
check that the boiler is at the right water pressure, pressure often drops. It needs to be on around 1.3 when cold and to reach 1.5. There is a tap below the boiler, tweak slowly and you will hear it run in. Other thing is to manually move the diverter valve which will be somewhere in your plumbing gubbins
my plumber told me both things, said that low pressure is the biggest cause of callouts and many plumbers rip off customers0 -
Thank you for the information Pattypan4, I was lucky, found a helpful 10 reason's why youtube vid, which helped me do it myself even if it take me an hour, so saved my purse string's for a bit longer, hardest part was the furry owner trying to 'help' and then she sat on my back.£71.93/ £180.000

Woken up to a severe frost this morning, although I'm impressed with how warm the house still feels. Thermometer says the temp went down to 14c indoors last night & with the heating having been on an hour it's around 17c now & very comfortable.
I put that down to the wonders of the dehumidifier. & There was only a tiny bit of condensation on the bottom of the bedroom window.
I'll be going out for a walk soon to enjoy the crisp air.0 -
A thick frost here as well Novice investor, glad the dehumidifier is helping to keep the house warm. Enjoy your walk.£71.93/ £180.000

Trying to get my washing machine cycle finished early so I can drape the thicker items over the radiators and gain the drying advantage of some residual heat in them before the morning timer breakfast timer switches off!0

boultdj, I can't recommend getting one highly enough. I didn't have any damp issues so never thought I'd needed one until one day I decided to check the humidity downstairs, as opposed to just upstairs, & I was shocked!
I always used to feel chilly downstairs, even when the thermometer said 19c & the heating was on. Now the indoor air is dryer, it feels a lot warmer.0
