Preparing for Winter V

Most of our town was without water for over 12 hours one day last week.It was due to a major pipe bursting so we had no warning. We managed as we keep in a supply of bottled and I'd filled the camping water carrier the week before as we'd been warned that our water might be cut off for planned work -it wasn't but I'd not got round to emptying the carrier.
The supermarket soon sold out of water and I heard of someone filling a bucket from the river so they could flush the toilet.
It made me realise how much we depend on having running water-i don't know how many times I automatically turned on the tap that day.
I feel your pain!
When we bought our current house in February there was no water supply. We lived with bottled water till our borehole was drilled at the beginning of April and occasionally resorted to flushing the toilet with water from the river.
Even after the borehole was done we only had access to cold water from a standpipe under the stairs and it was a few months more before we got a new boiler fitted and at last had hot water on tap (upstairs bathroom basin only).
In fact today - ten months and four days since moving in - DH finally fitted our kitchen tap (and dishwasher.....yay!) so we have hot and cold running water downstairs!
We've become so used to having to go upstairs to fill buckets, bottles for water for our dogs etc that I'm struggling to get used to the novelty - earlier I was headed off up the stairs with several small empty bottles when DH reminded me there was no longer any need to do that
In other news, still not had the central heating on (except that incident when a mouse chewed through a pipe) and are only lighting one wood burner each evening. We plan to light both over Christmas though....Mortgage-free for fourteen years!

Good Morning all, I hope you all had a lovely festive period...
I am sat here with the window wide open listening to the gulls squawking in excitement, whilst following in the pilchard boats... It's quite a comforting sound, I'm very close to a big working fishing harbour... It doesn't feel like winter at all.
Looking forward to taking the pooches on a long walk to Mousehole today to blow out the christmas cobwebs, it's always such a nice walk and I take a flask of tea, some sarnies and a couple of treats for the 4 leggers, when we get to our destination there is a small bench at the far end of the land that looks out across the bay with an almost 360 degree view of only the water... If we are lucky we will catch a view of a passing big fishing trawler, It's very serene and great for the soul...
Hubby is a deep sea fisherman and so if we happen to see one while having our picnic the 4 leggers get very excited thinking that 'Daddy' is on his way in with FISH :rotfl: However, he has only just gone so unless the boat is poorly it will be lidl pollack for the next week for them..
Anyhoo, I noticed it's been very quiet here, so decided to bump the thread back up and wish you all a Happy forthcoming New Year :TThriftkitten

We would be bankrupt if ours did, I try to only nip to l*dl for the frozen white fish, I dare not go near the fresh aisle with the other half as he always starts huffing and puffing and getting himself worked up about the price they charge for fresh fish and within 5 minutes he's managed to work himself up into a frenzy talking about how sunken their eyes are and how bad they look and then it escalates into him giving the fishmonger a lecture about how they have all the danger and get only a tiny fraction of the price:eek: which is true... but like kids and the sweet aisle i know to avoid it like the plagueThriftkitten

That sounds like a lovely way to spend a Sunday TK. My grandad had a boat out of Pittenweem and I've been left with a love of the sea and boats.0

I've been checking back but it has been really quiet, probably a reflection on the mild weather we've had.
So what are others views on the return of "The Beast from the East"?
I follow a few weather reporters and the models and evidence does look like it's following a similar pattern to Feb/March last year.
I've got loads of food here, we would certainly get by if we didn't fancy going to the shops but Aldi is only over the road if we did.0 -
Scots weather forum is getting excited re middle-to-end of this month for some decent wintry weather kate0

It’s really frosty here today. The temperature has really dropped over the last day so maybe winter is on its way.
We have hardly had the heating on yet.
We are well stocked up if the roads are bad, but it’s rare that the trams can’t move so I can get to work ok.

Today has been one of those awful "dark grey skies" days which I find are increasingly depressing my mood and make it really difficult for me to feel motivated to do anything.
I'm wondering whether one of these "daylight" lamps would help jolt me out of these feelings. Does anybody use them and do they really make a difference? If so, can anybody recommend one that isn't too expensive which really works?
I find when the sun is shining, even if it's cold, I can get going and be more productive. With January and February to get through before we start seeing any major improvement in daylight levels, I'm desperate for anything which will lift my mood. I do exercise outdoors with a group twice a week which helps, but any practical suggestions for coping with the Grey Sky syndrome would be welcome.0 -

It's cold here tonight, we had a heavy frost this morning and the world was beautiful but hurt if you weren't wearing gloves. I see from the weather forecast we're due to be minus 3 tonight and it certainly feels colder in all the other rooms than the lounge where we have the stove lit. Thank goodness we ordered in an extra delivery of logs last week!0
