Preparing for Winter V

  • It's bitingly cold in South Yorkshire, but not much snow my way.
I've turned the CH temp up on the boiler from 70c to 85c max. I've enjoyed the lower gas bills (even tho the hearings been on longer) & not really been cold in the house, it has usually stayed around 16c without the CH on in the day & warmed up quickly after.

This week, the boilers been firing the whole evening (5-8pm) & still not hitting 18c indoors. Temp during the day dropping to about 13c indoors. So I've whacked it up for a couple of days, to give the house a boost & get some warmth into the walls.

Looks like the cold snap will have passed by next week, so it'll be back to 70c.

The walks to work have been enjoyable. The crisp, freezing air on my face whilst wrapped up really warm in my big winter coat & hiking boots.
  • It felt freezing here last night. :eek:I went out for a short walk to the shops and then couldn't warm up when I got in.

We had to put the portable heater in our bedroom for a while before we went to bed.

For Mardatha's ears. Our noses have blood vessels that enable blood to be warmed when we breathe in cold air from our noses. This puts more pressure on the heart. Breathing cold air in from our mouths doesn't get warmed up so isn't too good for our lungs. I order you to get out your knitting needles, knit they self a scarf, stitch it to you big coat and never go out on your high hills without your breathing orifaces covered again. :D y'hear. ;)

  • I live in Aberdeenshire and we were. -10 Wednesday night ,just let the dogs out and I think it will be same today.Aberdeen (according to weather forecast)was -14 on Wednesday night.I left a bottle of water in the car only to find it was frozen solid along with the bottle of de-icer.
  • It snowed here last night, but it had melted this morning. I think it is so cold today and there is a bitter wind.

I came home on the underground train and it was already full even though it wasn't rush hour yet. Maybe the managers let people start their weekend early because of the weather?;)

Well it's been a while since I posted in here (October 2016 apparently!!). I'm not even going to attempt to catch up! :rotfl:

I've decided that I really need to make a concerted effort to prepare better for next winter. I have so many plans and I just haven't managed to execute any of them! This summer my teen and I will be rolling up our sleeves and getting jobs done if it kills both of us. We need to do something, our gas/electric bill has just been upped to £104 a month (They wanted it at £134 a month but I dropped it)

I will be back, with a list of things that needs to be done by the end of the month hopefully. Then from July 1st (post exams!) we'll be getting stuck in ;)
Creeping back in for accountability after falling off the wagon in 2016.
Need to get back to old style in modern ways, watching the pennies and getting stuff done!

Not sad to say an inner spark of 'I love chilly weather and snuggling under a blanket' lurched forwards when I saw this thread pop up again...and full blown flicker of 'I love a list' when I saw your post Nicki. :T
We're still approaching the warmer months with lots of potential to act and change our costs and have an impact come October/November...:j
    Best of luck to you!

Yes, another one here who had a lovely little "ooh, yes, not long til midsummer and then the nights start drawing in!" when I got the notification from here!

I'm just getting things organised in my guerilla garden, hoping to sow and grow runner beans this year, to string and slice and freeze for the winter. My chap hates most veg, but does eat peas (far cheaper and easier to buy those frozen, on offer) but when we have a Sunday roast he eats runner beans with it, so we'll try freezing our own for the winter's treat meals!
A small thing, but still - worth trying, it'll save us a quid on each meal, plus we won't be eating beans flown in from Kenya in midwinter!
