Preparing for Winter V

Mar,
I love visiting a home with a coal fire but getting up on a cold winter morning to a house that's toastie warm is sheer heaven.0 -
We run a coal-fired stove WW, it stays lit 24/7 for most of the year. Husband feels the cold so it only goes off in really hot weather. I could do with 10 degrees less, I'm always roasting!!0

Ah! that's different! I'd happily tend to a coal fire and I'm in awe of anyone who will quite happily light one.
One thing I DO love is the smell of a turf/peat fire.0 -

When it was especially cold, I often used to leave the coal fire in my parents' Victorian drawing-room grate burning overnight, just as you do with a wood or peat fire, 'smooring' it with ash so it smoulders slowly through the night, then in the morning you rattle the ash down into the pan, leaving the glowing embers in the grate, add more small pieces and blow and there it is, fully going again in 30 seconds or so.2025 remaining: 37 coupons from 66:

I really enjoy looking after a fire, it's so satisfying and homely. I don't like the stove as it has doors, and I miss seeing the flames. But it heats the radiators and dries all the washing and gives us unlimited hot water so I shouldn't moan.0

So... not sure if this is the right part of the forum or not but anyone noticed the first of the long range weather forecasts for winter? How do they look?0

The 2nd bunker I got is now full to the brim. Advice noted, thanks, and a separate wooden plinth added under it. Additional winter prep underway by adding a box of firefighters to the weekly shopping. Already have logs in the store but may need to be rotated to keep dampness out of them.On a mission!

The de-icer for paths which I bought year before last is sitting unused in the hall. We don't get enough snow here.0

I think it was Kittie who was into the long-range stuff with Piers Corbyn being her prophet. I have to say that the Express got it right this year (although I always dismiss anything they say at the outset) and the cold winter and hot summer were a reality. I will follow this in case anyone has any inside info!Solar Suntellite 250 x16 4kW Afore 3600TL dual 2KW E 2KW W no shade, DN15 March 14

Well if kittie does have the inside info then she sure isn't going to share it on here, not any more!0
