  • I don't think I ever stop preparing as I try to take advantage of winter clothes and equipment sales whenever I find them and that's usually in high summer. I actually got a substantial reduction on a heavy padded waxed jacket at a country show that I tried on and bought on the hottest day of the year so far, the stall holder was so delighted to get a sale, let alone a waxed jacket sale that he took 50% off! result!!! and we're ALWAYS on the look out for wood for the stove no matter what time of year, that's an ongoing job!

Still feeling like Winter here... I'm waiting for a dry day so that I can wash and dry my 'winter' coat but was wearing it yesterday and very glad of it! Decent temperatures forecast for the weekend... we shall see!
'Ne'er cast a clout 'til May is out' is always a useful reminder in our house. Bedding plants won't be venturing out until then either :)
Mardartha, I've often found that charity shops 'over the border' are an excellent hunting ground for good quality woolly jumpers and cardis, even if they're just used as an extra layer at home ;)

I used to get the sons loads when they worked on the farm but not so keen for myself somehow. I think I spent so many years haunting secondhand clothes shops that now I've gone the other way.
And the old saying works better I think in my accent

You need them when you need them.

Personally, I’m still looking for a classically styled, woman’s trench coat with a heavy, detachable lining (complete with sleeves). My husband has one from M&S, but they don’t appear to do them for women, not with a detachable lining anyway. I bought something similar from C&A years ago, but it is wearing out. I’ve only been looking since last September.... I even checked C&A in Calais. Nothing. Nothing. They are rarer than decent pockets in a woman’s suit.

I know what you mean about wearing second-hand clothes, maybe we're a bit more affluent these days, but I do often find thicker ones than are available in the 'proper' shops. :) You're right about the quote too. A clout here tends to mean a hard punch so probably not quite the same meaning! ;) 'Give him a clout' could produce a quite different action! :)
PS We had a lovely warm day yesterday so maybe we are coming out of one of the most dismal winters that I can remember. Let's hope so!

  • It's a glorious day here in Berkshire - so I am giving the winter blankets a wash before they finally go away until (hopefully October).

I got my daughter a winter coat for next winter in the sale at a garden centre - £15 instead of £45 - even better as she likes it!

I am keeping my eyes peeled for some decent boots - ones that last more than one winter - I don't drive so they need to be weather proof but nice enough to wear for work. I don't mind paying if they fit the bill!

    Hope everyones enjoying the sunshine!

So... hopefully winter's behind us for this year. Weather's still a bit ugh but seems to be slowly improving. Anyone know the long term forecast for the upcoming winter? Going by earlier posts, looks as if it could be interesting again. How early do you start to prepare?

And we haven't even had summer yet - I know... :D

I've just started preparing - ordering pillar candles, new door curtains and draught excluders, so far.

  • My main prep aim for May is to find a small but deep Really Useful box, wash our winter accessories, and then put them in the box and for that to go in the bottom of our wardrobe. Otherwise October will roll around and I'll have no idea where DHs scarves or my hat are.

Also need to buy some decent gloves!

I've been away working for a few weeks and will get back home next Wednesday, and am really itching to get at the housework! :) I do love our little flat...

Anyway, I have a couple of boxes in the bottom of the wardrobe, and my plan is to get out the sandals and sun-tops, and then systematically wash, check and darn, and fold up and put away all my heavy winter woollies. I have another box in the hall, on a shelf above the front door, and will be washing and checking our gloves, hats, scarves before putting them away.

I've meant to do this for each of the three years I've lived there, but nver have don - so this year I shall do!
