I already posted this in the Prepping thread but I suppose it really belongs in here - this is a farmer in the Scots weather forum :
"The damage from the start of March is begining to emerge from the melting drifts as hundreds of dead sheep are discovered in the hilly areas of the borders and central Scotland. These hardy Blackface sheep are always left to fend for themselves on the hill and normally can survive most storms but I believe the depth of drifts is the worst seen for decades."
My forecast is for sleet and heavy snow due on Monday I think. I want so much to get out into the garden but its sitting at 3C here and baltic in the windPoor mites.

Very cold and windy and wet here in South Yorkshire. Proper miserable, as we say around here. We are expecting a good few hours of sleet, possibly snow tomorrow! What a way to spend Easter Sunday? I think it may well be food, films and fireside for us tomorrow!:hello:  please play nicely children !0

We woke up to 2 inches of snow, and forecast for tomorrow is snow all day. Getting wee bit fedup now and wanting my garden to start growing.0

I learnt so much from that farmer in the Kilted Weather thread... I'm remembering a Borders hill-farmer I knew in my pheasant-beating days, who could just remember as a young lad getting let out of school along with all the other strong farming kids, only about 11 or 12, to help with lugging the hundreds of dead sheep out of (I think) the Ettrick to stop it flooding worse, in the 1963 thaw... I am sure the number he said for how many sheep were lost in that winter in the Borders was over four thousand...
I'm really wanting to get out into the garden. I want to have the windows wide open for hours, not just for the 5 minutes a day minimum we always have. I love winter, and this one's been amazing for snow and ice for me, but it's happening too late in the year and my hindbrain wants to be growing things and getting outdoors properly!2025 remaining: 37 coupons from 66:

I'm a bit the same Laura. I like winter but in wintertime
I remember 1963, I was 13 at high school and we lived on a hill then too. I remember snow coming in the bedroom windows and my mum hanging up blankets on top of the curtains.
I've always fancied living up Ettrick or Yarrow valleys but it never happened. That's seriously remote living, we're too old now to do it.0 -
Biggest danger down here is being washed away at the moment, the ground is so wet it's quagmire like and the rain just keeps on raining and then raining some more plus higher than average tides have underwashed the coastal path and stretches of it have just plunged down on to the beach. Not life threatening as no housing but darned close to the Maritime Institute boat houses and launching sites, Oh for some dry weather and a bit of sunshine!!!0

Hope that stops for you soon MrsL. I've got heavy snow here and the wind is starting to pick up now.0

I agree with Mrs LW. Can whoever has the ark please send it this way?0

I've asked Mar to knit us a patchwork sail for the new one, we'll stop by and pick you up GREENBEE, just make sure you're on the highest bit of the roof so we can see you! xxx0

So... hopefully winter's behind us for this year. Weather's still a bit ugh but seems to be slowly improving. Anyone know the long term forecast for the upcoming winter? Going by earlier posts, looks as if it could be interesting again. How early do you start to prepare?
And we haven't even had summer yet - I know...0
