thanks for vent reminder primrose, I just closed the last 2. I had already covered the floor vent as I will not be using any naked flame until the freeze ends. S*d the cooking smells at lunchtime
Re the hair shirt thing, yes, one was a gp, I cannot understand it. I did try and keep my mouth shut yesterday, didn`t want to preach, I said it once and changed the topic. I have 7 actual heaters on plus immersion. Really am not worried because of the very good thermostats. I always felt guilty having so many hidden in cupboards but not any more they are perfect
Curtains upstairs are closed btw, also blinds, any bit of heat conservation helps0 -
I'm wearing lots of layers and feel quite warm and cosy.
I slept in really late, I woke up about 6 and then went back to sleep until 10! It must be the cold weather. I didn't want to get up as I felt so cosy. My husband got up with the dogs this morning to let them out so he is still sleeping in now!:p
I'm having jackets with baked beans for brunch/lunch.
I've swept the snow away from the patio and put the front door mat by the back door as we keep having to let the dogs in and out.
I'm off to have a hot shower.
Hope everyone is keeping warm and safe.:A0 -
I can't quite understand the mentality of those who choose to wear hair shirts and shiver when they can afford to pay for heating
I can afford to pay for heating, but choose to have it on for one hour in the morning as I get up and one hour in the evening. I also have all my upstairs windows open a crack, all day, all year round as I like fresh air. I don't see the point in wacking my heating on all the time just because everyone else does.
Heating is a very personal comfort; many people would find my house horribly cold, I often find other people's houses to be stuffy, airless, uncomfortable saunas.
Was disappointed getting home yesterday to find none of the local kiddies had made any snowmen; you don't get many chances to do that in London. They are an EYESORES!!!!0 -

eh? It is called looking after ourselves so that we don`t become a burden on others. Once you get to a certain age or are unwell or have a small child then the house needs to be at 18 for good health. Some of us live in far colder climes than the concrete and tarmac conurbation, we all know that these materials are heat reservoirs, as are people jammed together0 -
I've just re-cycled one of those cheap plastic shower caps that you get free in hotels.
It's made a fabulous fitted draught excluder on the air vent in the downstairs loo!Not dim.....just living in soft focus

That's why I keep the fire on 24/7 for most of the year kittie. My stone walls are warm.
Fuddle make sure you've got enough meds for the weekend pet x
I've got to be at the docs Monday morning for an important blood test and right now I don't see it happening.0 -
We haven't put the heating on or lit the stove yet because the house is as insulated as it can be and we've got sensible layers of clothing on. The chimney breast that the inset stove is in is still warm to touch from yesterdays fire and the air temperature is comfortable for us because we're used to not having the heating on, usually just run with the stove when it gets cold enough for us to feel chilled in here. We've had plenty of hot drinks to keep us warm, I've made soup for lunch so the kitchen temperature is up from that and we've just eaten said soup so we're warm too. I'm just off to walk Cookie dog as it's not snowing hard out there and there isn't much laid, I expect the fire will be lit when I get back at 3ish and there will be hot tea made too. The news has just said that industry is being asked to use less of the available gas supply to ensure that homes can still be warmed and food can still be cooked in them, nothing dreadful seems to be in the offing such as no gas at all. Stay warm, have hot drinks and food, dress in lots of layers and don't sit too long, move around a bit regularly and you should all be fine xxx.0

Just observing that home temperature is a personal choice. I always put the heating on more if I'm expecting guests, as I appreciate most people prefer it warmer than I do, but I'll have it as "cool" as I like when I'm in on my own.
I've mentioned this before, but the local doctor in the village where I grew up refused to have central heating installed upstairs as he considered it unhealthy, and maintained that it was best to be wrapped up warm in bed, but breathing cool fresh air. That was in a rural area.
Just been told it's the wrong type of snow (too powdery) for snowmen!!!They are an EYESORES!!!!0 -
Our bodies are conditioned to work best at around 37 degrees. If our bodies are cold then the immune system doesn't work as well to fight viruses and bacteria. The lowering of our bodies core temperature suppresses immunity, leaving us wide open to infection.
This is one of the reasons why we're to wrap a scarf over our mouths when it is cold. Breathing warmed air allows for a comfortable immune response to pathogens. Breathing cold air initiates a response that distracts the body as it deals with the 'threat' of being cold, allowing viruses and bacteria to slip on by.0 -
I keep my bedroom window open always, unless it's like today - blowing in a blizzard lol. I keep the electric blanket on low all night when it's cold though. Wind really picking up here and the snow is swirling around like sand in between showers. The shepherd up the top of the street is lambing in a big fancy white marquee, looks like he's having a garden party for the sheepies lol. When I passed it the other day he had bales piled up at the entrance to keep out the wind.0
