Open jaw flights should work fine. If you can't see the option on a flight booking web site, try looking for "multi-city" etc.

I guess you'd use an internal flight to get between the two places, but if you drove then you'd probably incur a one-way rental drop-off fee on the car rental, except perhaps for places in the California, Nevada and Arizona triangle with the rental booked via a broker outside the USA.

I've heard consistently good reports of Sanibel Island on Florida's west coast. I've been up that coast but never to Sanibel, and I suppose you'd need a car to get there from Miami or Tampa. Map:

Otherwise, the Florida Keys is an excellent suggestion, except that in summer the whole of the southeastern USA is very hot and very humid. The southwest is equally hot, but not humid.

And if you do go to Florida, be mindful of hurricane season. We were evacuated from the Keys, during our Honeymoon, thanks to Ivan!

Would agree- when we went on honeymoon in 2006 we did Boston, Caped Cod & New York
