How long does it take to switch?

I am currently with Talk Talk for phone and broadband on a regular LLU connection giving me just over 3 Mb. The service has been ok but the line speed is becoming a bit of a nuisance with buffering on BBC iplayer and even slowing down of general Internet usage at certain times. Fibre is now available in my location but not with Talktalk so I am considering a move to either BT or Plusnet, both of whom offer a fibre connection.

How long does it typically take to switch providers given that I understand an engineer must do the fibre connection for the broadband. Given that Christmas is fast approaching the last thing I want is no phone and/or broadband at that time.

Many thanks.

Same sort of move for me to Plusnet one day to BT one day .
  • If keeping the same number and switching from TT to BT or Plusnet it would take 14 days. But then after this 14 days i`d believe you would need an engineer visit for the fibre install and that depends on engineer availability.
As its not available to Talk Talk im guessing the Fibre has just gone live in the area in which case there maybe a lot of people in the area with the same idea.

Would I be suffering downtime for my internet if I need to be given a new number or would the transition be seamless ?

    I am getting this note:

You don't have a compatible phone service. To use our broadband you'll need to take one of our Home Phone packages - we'll give you free activation worth £25.

Your existing service should carry on working until you've switched over. Switching your phone takes 2-3 weeks and your broadband usually activates on the same day.

We need to give you a new phone number. We'll provide further details once we've processed your order.

I noted that they also state "If you need a new phone line installed at your property there's a £49.99 installation charge."

I assume since I already have an existing phone line which I connect my router to, I do not need to pay for this installation charge right ?

Hi I was thinking of going to PlusNet fibre from TalkTalk standard llu broadband I phoned then up to check about going back to bt line from llu sayed the £50 would be waived , if going to bt fibre broadband from TalkTalk llu beware £140 connection charge, I then phoned up TalkTalk and got a better deal with then on fibre if you have fibre in your area would think TalkTalk fibre would be available go to samknows .com do a broadband available check enter your tel no or postcode will then tell you if TalkTalk fibre is available

I've checked Sam Knows and it has confirmed that Talk Talk don't yet have a fibre option in my area. BT and Plusnet only became available in the last couple of months so I may wait to see what comes up with Talk Talk in the next few weeks.
