All of you who suggested Chester, Liverpool or Manchester because "it's en route", please think again and go look at a map, hehe
InsideInsurance, if you like character and history, a stately home is the best place to go
Someone suggested Chatsworth House, and that's great, but again a bit offside. Within 1 hour of Leeds you've got Harehood House, Temple Newsam or Castle Howard, all completely amazing (I've been to all several times).
I also vote for the Yorkshire Sculpture Park, but I agree with you that the weather must be nice, heheBeing brave is going after your dreams head on0 -

Many thanks for the suggestions, we spent a weekend up in Liverpool a few months ago and it was very good even if we got continuously caught up in their annual parade. Thankfully we didnt take up the offer parking out the front of the hotel as people used the cars parked there to stand on for a better view and I doubt that'd have done the car any good.
Was hoping for less of a detour from the M1 than Chester and despite being National Trust/ English Heritage members we've always preferred the grounds or displays/ activities -v- the inside of stately homes. Characterful towns/ villages with history etc is really the thing and looks like there are a good few suggestions there to look at.
Thanks again0 -
If you are going via the M1 what about Hardwick Hall, there's 2 National Trust places to visit, the new hall and the estate Mill and the Old Hall is English Heritage, also if you fancy a spot of lunch or a drink try Hardwick Inn just on you way out of the Park it's just off junction 29Why pay full price when you may get it YS
