15 year olds no longer able to work at all?

  • My daughter worked from the age of 15 in local cafes, no problem with employers wanting 16+. Most of her hours worked were over school holidays where the times of work is a lot more flexible, but she had a saturday shift that kept her money regular enough! It depends where you love, we live in a seaside town, so pub jobs, cafe jobs etc are easy to come by seasonally, yet more tricky in the winter.

Do any of her friends have jobs? She may find it easier if there is a company or business which is already willing to take on someone younger.

Employers want what they call "flexible" staff these days - not day-related, but people they can phone up and call in at short notice. They'd rather have one "flexible" person, or somebody that can do Saturday AND Sunday (and a couple of evenings) rather than one person for one specific day.

Not saying it's impossible, but it's not as easy as it used to be, say.

And someone they can use behind the bar if they get desperate!

Add to that the fact that there are adults out there now who need these kinds of jobs just to stay afloat and it doesn't leave much for school children.

  • I think all the instances of under 16 work I can recall, have been off the books. (I am not advocating this at all, just recalling my experiences) Usually cafe, restaurant and other food places, paper rounds and hairdressing assistants etc.

My daughter was not able to get a Saturday job until she was 16 years old. They all wanted National Insurance number and passport.

The only jobs my offspring could get under the age of 16 were paper rounds. Then at 16 they all got part-time jobs in supermarkets.

My eldest aged 14 has a paper round every morning before school paying £25 a week. He also works on a Saturday on our local market for £2 an hour.
There is a forgotten, nay almost forbidden word which means more to me than any other. That word is England.

My DD has just landed her first job at River Island. We live near the metrocentre and no word of a lie she applied for almost 200 jobs. She tried small local places, pubs the metrocentre, in Newcastle. She started when she was 15. My friend have her a summer job in an office to get something on her cv. Made no difference.

But... She then got this one. I don't know how, nothing was different to the other applications but I'm so pleased she has it. She is now 16 and in her third week. It's a huge shock to her, for hours each Sat and Sun, you'd think she was working ten hour daysthe way she goes on .

Keep trying, don't give up. It's a great way to be introduced into work and how not always everything falls on your lap.
Forty and fabulous, well that's what my cards say....

The rules and paperwork put employers off. Last under 16 pot washer employed by OH- father came in and complained he was 10 mins late going for a break. Owner was then worried that they may start trying to start some instigate some complaint, so now a blanket ban on under 16's now. Just not worth the bother.

I had a pot wash job at 14, £2 per hour!
