Interesting stuff. I have just started to zone using programmable TRV's. Seems to be working well.

I'd be interested in a review comparing these two systems side-by-side but haven't seen any. Maybe it's early days yet.

The commonly quoted URL is http://recombu.com/digital/news/smart-energy-systems-nest-hive-evohome-heat-genius-owl-tado-salus-it500-cosy_M13058.html but it's not a straight bake-off.

True. The gap gets narrower each day. For example, Evohome now has IFTT* support. The app has also just been updated, so I can now change each room schedule on my phone or pad. Both systems use quality wifi TRVs so I suppose that it comes down to price, support and ease of use. The Evohome's software doesn't require the presence of an IT literate teenager to operate it.

*IFTT. If this, then that. Eg: If the temp in the baby's room falls below 15C, then e-mail me.

An interesting document; most of it was very well explained, except they lost me with "External temperature (chamber) set to average temperature of 5°C".

What is the 'chamber' and how do they set the external temperature?

The house is inside an environmentally controlled chamber so they can accurately control the temperature outside the house.

Likewise they've got a chamber on the side of the house to simulate the adjoining terraced house and adjust it's temperature independently.

The University of Salford Energy House is a traditional 1900’s end terrace two bed-room property that sits inside an environmentally controlled chamber.

Cost is dependent on the number of your radiators, I guess. But it aint cheap! As we have just downsized to a much smaller place we actually only have 5 radiators now (live in a 2 bedroom bunglaow whereas previously we lived in a 4 bed house with 12 radiators in total). Here's our cost breakdown:

Evohome Bae Pack (includes touch screen controller and boiler relay swith box) £187.06
Wireless Access box (not *totally* necessary if you aren't bothered about controlling the system via smartphone etc) £57.06
    5 wifi TRVs £289.99
Comi Bolier so need for the Hot water Kit (approx £90?)
    Fitting £120

    Total £650

First impressions are it's a very well made system, all the components feel very solid. Works superbly and has definitely contributed to us using less gas plus the system makes the previous chore of manually re-setting the TRVs in each room a thing of the past (hand on heart it's not something I could be arsed to do most of the time).

Whether all this is worth the initial outlay wil be a personal decision, of course.
