Worth upgrading from xbox 360 to xbox one yet?

I am buying my boys an Xbox one for Christmas and am seriously having trouble finding a good deal with the Kinect, do they need it?
They play alot of games online with friends, mainly Minecraft and Call of Duty.
Also if they have a Xbox 1 and a friend has a 360 can they still talk to each other? If the friend has Minecraft on 360, but my boys have a 1 can the boys still play with their friend?
Any help would be much appreciated
I have two Xbox Ones, one on the main TV which the missus plays on, so it's hooked up to TV, soundbar etc. We have Kinect on this one and it's simply for voice commands, we very rarely use TV remotes now - just need to when Kinect doesn't recognise the channel I'm telling it to go to.
The other one has no Kinect, annoying recording things in a heated multi-player game and has cost me on occasion.
I'd say Kinect is for the most part a convenience thing, at least for my household, can walk through the door, tell the Xbox to turn on (which I have it set to turn on the Console, TV, Soundbar and Sky Box all in one go) and simply tell it to go to TV or tell it which channel to watch when on, while we take coats off/put things away etc.Professional Data Monkey

Given the inability to play the massive 360 collection I have, I doubt I will ever spend £300 on an Xb1.
Mind you, I still have the original Xbox 1 I bought about 10 years ago.0 -
@szam - we have a similar setup. Both our Xbox Ones are in the same room so we can both do whatever we want without all the hassle of fighting over the 'main TV room'. We have a few rules about what voice commands we are allowed to use though as both consoles respond to everything which can be annoying at times! (Xbox Record That is fine, Xbox Go To TV really isn't!)
Just wondered if you were aware there is a setting now that the Xbox One can boot to TV if that is what you use one of the consoles for most? We have found it quite useful for the one we usually watch TV on (say "Xbox On", console and TV switch on, TV plays immediately).0 -
Money permitting I would upgrade to the Xbox 1 if all his friends are getting it. Think I am correct in saying that they can only play online together if they own the same model.Money SPENDING Expert0

Yes, if his friends have xbox ones and he has a 360, they wont be able to play together or party chat.
They said they weren't able to make it backwards compatible.
As for kinect, cheapest deal i've seen for it was xbox one, kinect, AC unity, AC black flag and dance central for £385 - although I didnt search in depth to see if you can get it cheaper using any available discount codes (sometimes retailers offer a set amount/percentage off your first order with them).
Personally I got mine with kinect. Was around £120 to buy kinect separately where if you buy it with the console, it was £50 extra. It is mostly convenience thing but I'm hoping games start to embrace it - a few games do have uses for it, like i think battlefield you can call for a medic and stuff like that. You can also set it to sign you in when you step in front of the kinect - it recognises you and signs you in automatically.
Can get 12 months xbox live for around £25 (cd keys website and a few others).
From what I've read (and if memory serves), you only need 1 xbox live subscription for xbox one and whoever signs in on that console will be able to use it. So siblings (or parents!) can play also without needing to purchase another gold subscription.
You do also get free games with gold (some are utter crap but they do sometimes give really good games free) and discounts on other stuff - so spending £25 for a years subscription does yield far more than that in value. You keep using that word. I do not think it means what you think it means - Inigo Montoya, The Princess Bride0 -
if you have a PC i'd say get it on pc. If you dont have one you could buy one for 300-400 which will play it with no problem if you build it yourself, possibly even get a built one for same price0

The Xbox One has come on leaps and bounds since launch and is now home to a handful of great games with more on the horizon. So if that's what they've asked for and you can afford it, I'd say it's definitely a good buy for Christmas, especially with some of the deals floating around at the moment.0

Agreed, I moved from 360 to One, there aren't enough games for it yet but the ones that are out are brilliant (Forza 5 and Forza Horizon 2 particularly). Plus there are a lot of great indie games you can download online. You get some free (small) games too if you have a Gold account (for online), some of the games are good and some less so, but it is a nice bonus.
Plus if you get the Gold account then you get some pretty big discounts on games if you download them (different offers all the time).
Overall I love it, but it isn't cheap and there are a lot of additional costs (potentially anyway) to get extras in some of the games.0 -
I've just joined the ranks of people who've upgraded from Xbox 360 to Xbox One. I have to say the graphics are spectacular on the One.
So far I've played Assassins Creed Black Flag, which I think is good so far, and Titanfall (wasn't expecting a multiplayer campaign mode, which I suck at, never been good at online PvP first person shooters).
I'm still waiting to download Forza 5 and Assassins Creed Unity. I don't like to get into too many games at once, two will do me for now!
The first thing that strikes you is the level of detail, it's levels above anything the 360 can do.
Looking forward to getting a few more games over the Xmas period now!0 -
OH finally caved and bought the One - had a quick look last night but hoping to get some more time over the weekend for a proper play with it. Personally I wouldn't have got one, at least not yet. I love the 360, and still have loads of games to finish on that.
We'll be running both for the time being as I refuse to give up on the games I've started so I'll be able to compare.0
