first 2 houses were semi's first one next door were not nice and noisy, second house lovely and quiet but wife had a health problem that made her very sensitive to any noise so we went detached, good neighbours, next detached moved south but strange neighbours, next detached new build first neighbours ok but after 8 years got neighbours from hell both sides, in the end rented out our house and moved into a detached rental, finally exchanged on a detached house on a corner site and hope to move in in 10 days. Told wife only way to be sure is buy house in middle of field.0

So this am, picture this. Neighbour's white van boyfriend didnt stay over, shift workers day off so all was good in the hood...
Until 8am on a Sunday when the blo ody phone rang. It was an accident compensation automated message.0 -
Not possible to buy detached at under £350K where I live. I am grateful I was able to buy my mid terrace last year before the price hike
No real noise issues though0 -
The semi detached here are £415,000 up to £550,000, so you can imagine we are happy with our semi. We couldn't afford a detached unless we moved to a cheaper area.A minute at the till, a lifetime on the bill.
Nothing tastes as good as being slim feels.
one life, live it!0 -
Been in a semi for 6.5 years and moving to a detached a week on Friday. All I can say is - we'll never, ever, live in a house attached to anyone else, EVER again!! >_<0

Terraced make better investments at the moment by quite a lot. Find nice neighbours and you'll be quids in."Do not regret growing older, it's a privilege denied to many"0

I am currently having this dilemma too, not sure if we want the semi or detached
Semi detached house
Positives-much larger,bigger rooms, more space
Negatives-small garden, potential noise from neighbours
Detached
Positives-no noise from neighbours, larger garden
Negatives-smaller house and small bedrooms, needs more modernising, 15k more
In principle the semi seems a better deal but I guess it depends on how much emphasis there is on having no neighbour noise. If I move to the semi and the neighbours are awful I will regret it, if I move to the detached the lack of space may frustrate me...0 -

My first house was a semi. The neighbour was a little old lady who we never heard.:)
Then she died.:(
Our new neighbours were a young Chinese couple who were very prone to long screaming matches in Chinese when they got home from work at 2.00am.
Then they had a baby.:(
Then we moved to a detached:D
Would I move back to a semi? Only if I really, really had to.0 -
Moved from a mid terrace with open fronted gardens with awful neighbours both side, screaming kids, slamming doors, parking all over the street because they were too lazy to use their tandem driveway correctly, stuff thrown over fences, kids pulling up my potted flowers.....to a detached house in an area where most houses are similar size, 3 and 4 bed semis and detached. Tends to result in less renters and undesirable neighbours but that's just my personal experience. We actually do have tenants next door to us and they're absolutely lovely. I'd never live in a house that wasn't detached by choice, I grew up in detached houses till I bought my own and could only afford a 2 bed terrace. What a come down! Luckily there's now a husband and we can afford the detached house. Loving the silence, it really has reduced our stress levels. People underestimate how stressful noisy neighbours can be to you and your health. So I'd go with the smaller house personally :-)0
