EE or Three for pay as you go

Options
Hi,

I'm looking at moving to either EE or Three for pay as you go.

They work out quite similar in cost for me but I'm looking for some feedback on other issues eg how often does the signal drop out or the app/website not work, that kind of thing.

I was with Three a few years back and the signal would disappear for a day or so at a time every couple of months which was impossible to live with.

I don't have any experience of EE, but I gather customer service is poor, although I'd hope to port online and manage my payg account etc online.

I'd welcome any experiences please (I'm not interested in other networks or contracts) - many thanks.

Both offer good networks now, 3G is fast with good coverage. Three has more limited coverage on 4G compared to EE (who are the market leader for 4G by some distance).

I'm surprised you say costs would be similar thought.
Three PAYG is significantly cheaper than EE.

  • I use "3"'s 3 2 1 plan SIM in a couple of phones and for low use (which is the case for those phones) it is great.

I top up on the phone using a registered credit card and it is great.

In the past I've had a couple of fairly dreadful interactions with the "3" Indian call centre but I've not needed to for years. They were really nice people but couldn't get beyond the script on their computer screens.

What you can't do on "3" PAYG is tether. I do occasionally and seem to get away with it but I wouldn't rely on it.

For data I've sometimes used the "3" 1GB/1 month data SIMs (buy then throw away) but I've currently got an EE data SIM which is very fast. When used I'll probably buy another one.

Historically I've used the T-Mobile 6 months of 3G data for £20 deal (which is EE really) which is nominally 500MB/month but seems to tolerate fairly heavy abuse !

The EE/T-Mobile website is a bit poor (worse than the "3" one in my view) but does. I've not had occasion to call them since I stopped a contract phone a years ago (that was absolutely fine).

All in all, I would go with "3" for a phone and EE if they have 4G data where you are.

Try http://paygdeal.co.uk/index.html for your use and see what it suggests.

I'm allowing for the 100MB of data free very month on EE if you activate before the end of the year (or thereabouts).

Are you using both EE and Three at the moment?

Thanks. The EE site tells me there is 4G where I live. I'm waiting for a free SIM and will check.

I think my biggest worry is that I port my number over and it goes wrong and customer service is useless.

The paygdeal doesn't seem to include the latest EE payg 'packs' or the free 100MB of data every month for new customers, but I've done some rough calcs in a spreadsheet.

I do. I only use the EE sim for data though, the call and text costs are too high to consider it as a main sim unless you buy their bundles.

You do realise that Three will give you a free 150MB data allowance if you top up at least £5 (£5 top ups are only available online).

Calls are 3p on Three, 35p on EE unless you buy a bundle.
Texts are 2p on Three, 12p on EE unless you buy a bundle.

I'm on 3 payg and am very pleased with the service. I've been with them for over a year and had no connectivity problems. Topping up is easy, either online or via a voucher purchased from my local 3 store. I don't know what EE charge for payg but as far as I am aware they are not as competitive as 3. Porting my number was easy and went without any problems.

Thanks, yes I do. I hardly use minutes or texts as I tend to use whatsapp and VOIP. I don't use much data either as there's a lot of wifi about. The free data on EE keeps the cost down, but Three would be cheaper if my usage increased. Hence my main concerns are stability of service, website and customer service.
