Barclaycard compromised

I just got an automated call from barclaycard which basically just said:
"Your barclaycard has been compromised and has now been cancelled. We are sending out a new card with a new number".
I rang their fraud department to check, as this sounded a bit odd - I'm used to the regular automated calls which basically say "Do you recognise the following transactions?", but this was different.
The fraud department told me that they had detected a number of credit card details had been hacked, and that they believed my card was one of those, and that they had to cancel my card.
It's a bit odd, as I don't use the card for anything "dodgy", and while I do use it online, I only use it with reputable merchants. I've not made any change in my purchase habits, and there are no unrecognised or missing transactions on my statements.
I was just a bit curious as to what was going on. I'm guessing that it probably wasn't barclaycard themselves that were hacked, but possibly a merchant was hacked. Obviously, I'd like to know to see if I messed up, but barclaycard were keeping their lips tightly sealed.

One of the reputable merchants were hacked then or their credit card processor was and/or your card details must have been posted online somewhere
It's not unusual for those merchants holding your card details to pass it onto relative authority/your card holder if they feel they may have been compromised0 -

I've had my credit card cancelled in the past because it could have possibly have been compromised.
In my instance, I was told it related to a particular supermarket store, which was one off the big 4.
So it's not always something typically thought of as a 'dodgy' seller.
They never disclose particular details, but they obviously think it's a serious enough threat to not only go to the expense of cancelling affected customers cards and re-issuing them, but also the inconvenience customers may experience waiting for their new card to arrive.
Still, better safe than sorry.
It's nice to know someone cares.0 -

Why wouldn't you worry? Your details have been exposed on the Internet and possibly your personal details/address linked to whatever site you shopped at that may have been hacked
Or in the OPs case, a "reputable" company potentially compromised0 -
Reputable companies can be compromised.
You may want to check https://haveibeenpwned.com/ from time to time0 -

Your card details are "exposed" every single time you use them. Wherever you use the card.
If you're going to worry every time you use it, best not to have a card really. Pay cash.0
