although I don't remember any updates on those early versions (connected to the internet)
There's a very good reason for that...

Windows 1.0 predates the internet. Even the first usable version (3.0) predated it. So you weren't connected to the internet. You may have had a dialup modem to connect to bulletin boards etc.

There was no windows update service until the launch of Windows 95.
  • d/l over night and installed on my HP Envy X2, took 10 mins to install, no problems I can see. Don't have any 3rd party anti-virus or Start Menu tools installed though.

Same here on my Asus X75V (i5/8Gb) laptop - hasn't affected it in any way - as far as I can tell...

I don't remember any Win 95 updates - as such, at least not, regular (monthly) updates - I know there was a SP1 (with FAT32) but were there updates as well ?

According to Wikipedia the Windows Update website was launched alongside Win 95 but automatic upates didn't come til later.

From memory back in the MS-DOS DR-DOS and the other variants there were no updates just full new releases.

I remember getting a miniature Windows PC (95 iirc) that came with 17 floppies as the operating system. It's only a few years back that I flogged it on eBay minus floppies as they had been lost.

    I had SP1 win 95 -which came on considerably more than 17 floppies - I think about 25 !!

I'm pretty much sure mine was 17. The machine was a Libretto 50CT. I've had a quick search around (which was how I found the name which I'd forgotten) but can't find any reference to the number of floppies to back that up.

So what is that, if not an (early) experience of the Internet?

    Who else remembers when a
whole OS (DOS 6) came on 3
    floppy disks ?
    (ie Total of approx 4.5Mb)
That's odd, that amount would easily fit on a single floppy.
(esuhl pointed you in the right direction, so I'm just giving you a nudge :))
  • Microsoft played about with the 1,44 meg floppy so that you could not copy it , I think from memory it was something like 1,66 meg , however even in those early days links were sent from bulletin boards etc of programmes that would format your floppys to 1,66 meg

anyone with a win 95 cd handy , they could verify this they are listed as CAB files

PS: my Microsoft anti virus (MAD) on my 6,3 discs has never been updated , should I write to Bill?
