How do I go about getting a better rate after my contract has expired?

Options
I came to the end of my first phone contract a month ago and as I understand I should be able to get a better deal now that it's up, but I have no idea how to go about this. I'm on EE and all the information I can find seems to be on upgrading, but I don't want an upgrade I just don't want to carry on paying such a high price for a two year old phone. I assumed they would call me when the contract expired and give me options but they never did, and I don't really know what to say if I call them, I'm awful on the phone and if I call them without knowing what I can ask for I'll probably end up paying even more. Also I don't want to get into another long term contract. Any help would be appreciated!

Contract term end then you are on a 30 day rolling contract .

You owned the phone from day one .
You are at liberty to give 30 days notice and use any network on your phone ( may need unlocking ).
No long term contract then PAYG or just a network sim only contract with no new phone .

now you are at the end of your initial contract term you don't need to stay with EE at all.
So have a look around at sim only or payg plans which suit your current usage (not a similar plan to what you have on your contract if you don't use all that). Then apply to have your phone unlocked if the sim only/payg plan is not with EE. Then phone EE and give them your 30 days notice of termination.

or call ee and ask them what sim only deals they have
Don't put your trust into an Experian score - it is not a number any bank will ever use & it is generally a waste of money to purchase it. They are also selling you insurance you dont need.

No need to call, they are available on their website.

Arm yourself with current offers from other networks, write them down to refer you before you call (I do!). If tou're happy to keep your current phone you can go on payg, or commit to either a rolling 1 month or 12 month sim only deal. You'll usually get a better deal by committing to 12 months of course.
Three have some good deals to use as a bargaining tool (or swap to) if you can get a signal from them.
You either need to cancel outright, or request a PAC code to take to your new provider within 30 days if you want to keep your number.
Bear in mind, your contract doesn't expire, it just reaches the end of the minimum term, so you'll continue to pay the full rate until you do something!
  • Firstly, get your phone unlocked then use Bill Monitor (https://www.billmonitor.com) and http://paygdeal.co.uk/index.html to see what your best option is.

Activate your best option, get a PAC code from EE then use it on a Tuesday - Thursday about 3 - 10 days before the PAC code runs out (mid week so if the number port goes wrong it's not stuck over a weekend).

When you use your PAC (valid for 30 days) the contract ends but you pay the full 30 days from the PAC.
  • If you have cancelled the direct debit with your bank without contact with EE then you could be in trouble.
