    Proberbly about right for a short distance, I can average about 50mpg on my 2.0 cdti but that's going 20 miles each way to work .They take 20 mins to warm up .You will be getting DPF issues at some time If your only doing short journeys
  • I averaged about 35MPG when I had an Insignia hire car with the same engine over two weeks, short trips and general traffic.

    I get the same out of a 1.8 petrol doing identical routes.

    What's a DPF:o
    I just drive it through the traffic, should I go down the dual carriageway after, as that would be the only free road where it could get up to any kind of speed.

    DPF = Diesel Particulate Filter

    Very expensive if it goes wrong!

    If all you are doing is short runs, then unfortunately a new diesel isnt the car for you - as previous people have said you will not give the DPF time to regen - who advised you to get the diesel rather than the petrol?

    The salesman did, but I really know nothing about cars, just seem to be filling this one up much more than any other car I've driven with probably doing a lot less miles although virtually all my trips are in heavy traffic. I've definitely noticed it's taking a lot longer to get anywhere, lots of road works, more traffic, maybe that's as much to blame as anything else. I do wonder though if all that switching itself off when not moving might be using more fuel through re-starts, never had a car do that before.

    Switching off wont be the cause. Burning extra fuel to keep the DPF clean maybe the issue.

    If you dont do a 20 minute journey at 40mph+ its maybe trying to regenerate than then failing. That wastes fuel.

  • If you just plan to drive through heavy traffic all teh time then the cdti is the wrong car for you. Note issues about the DPF people are telling you about on here as when the fault occurs the dealer may let you off the first time and fix it for you but contined trips to the dealer for dpf blockages will result in you being releived of over £300 per visit as its not covered under warranty.

    Just google 'DPF problems' and you will find out.

    Should have bought a petrol.
