I have an Astra 2.0 from new last yr, really know nothing about cars but having owned a fair few down the yrs I have found them all to be much the same in consumption. Filled up on Monday to 380 miles to next fill up on screen, done the weekly school run and local shopping but almost empty again. I'm wondering if it's all the switching itself off at traffic lights etc and then starting up again or is there a problem with this car? Must admit the worst car I ever owned before this one was also a Vauxhall. Does anyone know if this is a thirsty car or something might be wrong with it, seemed thirsty from the get go but definitely not this much.
TIA

  • Petrol I presume so you are getting about 33-mph according to your computer right? That is about all you will get on the school run.

It's diesel 2.0 CDTI, school is about 3-4 miles through traffic.
    Thanks
  • So you are getting about 33 from a diesel?

If that's the maths on the information, then yes, or thereabouts.

33 mpg doesn't sound unreasonable if it's all stop start and heavy traffic in town.

I would be more worried about clogging the DPF than the fuel economy.

A 2L engine on a 3 to 4 mile journey wont be getting upto temperature so extra fuel will be pumping in to help warm it.

Ignore the trip computer it maybe way off the mark. When you fill up start keeping the receipts and make a note of the mileage.

Your either doing more miles than you think or not putting in as much as you think.

Ive had me 2L diesel Mondeo down to 26.8MPG. Short winter journey's. Nothing wrong with it. On a run i averaged 57mpg with a fully loaded car.
Just down to teh journey types. Short low speed journeys are best with a smaller engined car.

Thanks, looks like it's just the wrong car for the journey's I make, originally I wanted this same car, but 1.6, was persuaded out of it, that's my excuse, anyway.

Does it have a DPF? Do you give it a good run of at least 20 minutes after getting it upto temperature?

You might want to start doing some..

    What's a DPF:o
I just drive it through the traffic, should I go down the dual carriageway after, as that would be the only free road where it could get up to any kind of speed.

What is your anual milage? Sounds like you dont need a diesel. Keep your receipt whenyou fill up and it will teel you exactly how much fuel its given you. Compare it to the next one and work out the milage from there. Or get a new 1.5focus, 81 mpg claimed. Sounds good to me.
