tesco mobile unlock needed to use giffgaff sim?

hi all,

I've just bought a new handset, locked to Tesco mobile. I have a new giffgaff sim for it, which I assumed would work fine, as Tesco and O2 work on the same network (O2) which is also the one giffgaff uses.

With the Tesco mobile sim in the phone, there is a signal.

with the Giffgaff sim in the phone, emergency calls only. Does this mean I need to get my phone unlocked before I can use the giffgaff sim?

had a look on GG forum, apparently I do need to unlock a Tesco mobile handset to work a giffgaff sim in it. Off to ebay I go for the code then!

all sorted - moto e, unlock code from ebay £1.18, worked very easily, now have giffgaff sim in it and in full working order .
