BT Youview box for non-BT customer

Options
I am going to cancel my Sky subscription and change to some form of freeview service.

I see that you can buy refurbished BT Youview boxes for £69, but I am not a BT customer.

Will the recording and catchup functions still work if I don't have BT for broadband and phone?

The BT badge is irrelevant, so yes they will still work.

Your Sky box will continue to work after you cancel your subscription and will allow you to view (but not record) numerous FTA channels.

If you want to record, the most cost-effective solution is to buy a Freesat PVR (Humax get the most plaudits on here) from Cash Converters or Ebay.
Time has moved on (much quicker than it used to - or so it seems at my age) and my previous advice on residential telephony has been or is now gradually being overtaken by changes in the retail market. Hence, I have now deleted links to my previous 'pearls of wisdom'. I sincerely hope they helped save some of you money.

    Cheaper than £69 ?
Never, under any circumstances, take a sleeping pill and a laxative on the same night.

When bought (as suggested) second hand from Cash Converters etc, then it certainly can be cheaper.

    False Economy
£69 for a refurb youview with a little warranty box trumps a unit from cash converters

True that. A refurb box is both cheap and comes with a warranty. Mind you, brand new YouView boxes are as cheap as chips now, down to £180 if one looks around.

And YV have recently added a plethora of new services to boot -

The BBC Connected Red Button portals, the new beta BBC iPlayer, Quest on demand, the UK TV player, some Connect TV services in the 200's EPG range and to top the lot, Netflix.

    Nice.
