It would work, but it would seriously mess up the stores inventory. And Aldi are really strict on inventory checks, even the carrier bags...

That would be nothing, our assistant manager changes the stock levels many times per day, it only takes a second. e.g. we get in 10 drills, sell 3 then find there is only 6 on the shelf. Someone shoplifted one, so she just reduces the stock level by 1. It's no big deal.

In aldi's case it would be.......We had 100 bags, sold 50 and now we have 60 left....Result!.

Shops make those sorts of adjustments every day, when things get stolen, damaged, past their use by date etc.

And the fact that they make a profit from it has nothing to do with it.

    Probably is not definitely.

I never said that, but does that not make you want to bring your own so they don't get the profit?

Of course it isn't, but we can't assume the assistant did it on purpose without proof. If the bag was by the till it might have been an easy mistake.

If it is deliberate then the whole point would be the customer won't notice, so no, if you don't notice it won't make you want to bring your own.

Even if you do notice you might think "Well if I'm going to be charged for the bag I'm going to use it".

The law can't, but we can. And if we can't assume they are guilty then we can't assume they are innocent either.
  • To be honest I work in a supermarket and sometimes I stop paying attention to what I'm doing I think it was just an accident.
  • Don't bank on it !

I have been charged for carrier bags twice. I check my receipt every time and once I had no bags (as I had left them in the boot of my car) and my shopping was in a trolley ready to pack outside in the car park - the second time I had taken some old obviously pre-used ald! carrier bags in with me but they were not put on the conveyer belt with my shopping - I asked for a refund each time ... I wonder how many times they get away with this ......

    This is an hilarious thread.

    3p?

But if you have the time and all that, I suppose I envy you your persistence.

Why can people not look on this as a simple mistake? People at tills have a lot to deal with, and I doubt there is a mass movement to charge people 3p for bags they did not buy.

Have a little sympathy for the person at the till. They are human too.

Because we don't know it was a mistake, and the only way of finding out is by talking to other people about it.

Otherwise millions of aldi customers could be sitting at home thinking "Oh dear, the till assistant accidentally charged me 3p for a bag that I didn't have. Never mind, I'll forget about it and not mention it again."

I know they have a lot to deal with, but why didn't they notice the bag was there before the op arrived? Or did they also charge the previous customer for the same bag?

I do have sympathy for them, it was either a genuine mistake or someone higher up told them to do it. Either way, it's not their fault.

Last week in lidl I bought 6 kiwi fruit that are priced at 23p each or buy 6 for £1, when I got home I noticed I had been charged for 5, so I was given one for free but it cost me more!!
I don't feel it was done on purpose, I don't think the store assistants are out to put extra money into their employers accounts. They don't need to.
I just put it down to the store assistant rushing.

The quickest solution is to then just take a bag rather than fuss about demanding a refund.
  • I think it's laughable that anyone really belives that Aldi purposely tries to charge people for carrier bags without them noticing. Firstly because it's a very obvious and noticible charge on the receipt. So customers would tend to notice.

But also because inventory is not controlled at a store level, inventory checks happens often and area managers are in the store during this time. It doesn't matter if the stock is up or down on what it should be, as in any business this would be a serious concern and investigation into where the stock was going and who was profiting would be carried out.

As people have said, it's a high pressure environment working on a till in Aldi, you have to have your wits about you, and generally the staff do, I'd like to see how the majority of till staff from other supermarkets would cope coming from tills which do it all the work for them. But sometimes mistakes are made, most are caught before the customer pays. And as already mentioned often these carrier bag charges are likely to have been for produce, like carrots or kiwis, so you may actually have been undercharged. Reinforcing my previous point, if you do a big shop, you are unlikely to notice once missing item from a till roll, but you will certainly see the carrier bag charge you didn't pay for.

I do love it though, Aldi and the 3p carrier bag scandal.
