Search for Nexus Root Toolkit ... it'll allow you to flash any (compatible) ROM onto your device. (It isn't just for rooting Android devices).

Note: any data that wasn't backed will will probably be lost.

Thanks for that bod1467.....but can I have it in laymans language ??
My tablet is a Google Nexus 10 if that helps.
  • If you need help with searching then rooting an android tablet probably isn't for you. Do you have a techy minded friend that could help?

I'm not sure whether or not this is a wind-up ....

Did you really think that simply downloading something to your PC will automatically make your Nexus start working?

Perform a factory reset? That will return it to it's original Operating System, but will lose various files if you haven't backed them up onto a Cloud service like GMail, Google Drive or Box or similar. But you can usually put them back manually.

Click here and read well before doing this:

BTW I don't think giving the OP advice on rooting or flashing straight away is a viable option, given the level of knowledge displayed

Factory reset does't usually downgrade firmware updates. The only sure way to fix it would be to flash the factory firmware available from Google https://developers.google.com/android/nexus/images

I am running Lollipop on a Nexus 7 and it is running great without any problems, but I used fastboot to unlock the bootloader and flashed the factory image before locking the bootloader again, I wonder if the problems are caused by leftovers from Kit-Kat and the switch from Dalvik to Art so it's best to have a clean install of Lollipop rather than using the OTA update.

The OP hasn't specified just what he means by "completely useless" which covers everything from bricked through slow to some favourite app is misbehaving.

A factory reset will just erase user data, clear out things like the cache partition, and restore the original software from when it was last installed/upgraded. It won't revert from 5.0 to an earlier release because the install also sets up the recovery stuff.

It's still worth trying though if the tablet is running slowly as post #13 by Mercenary in https://forums.moneysavingexpert.com/discussion/5118672 says a reset sorted out some problems with his Nexus 7. My own Nexus 7 upgrade involved a reset anyway and went smoothly.

It's going to be a whole lot easier for somebody without experience to do first rather than attempting to flash it back to KitKat.

I downloaded Lollipop onto my Nexus10 with no problems.
However, there are changes to the way apps are accessed and closed, so maybe the OP hasn't explored enough to get the hang of these yet.
