Using a card to pay off another card (with a twist!)

Options
Hi all

I have a card lying round that I don't really use - It has 0% on balance trransfers for 18 months.

My brother has £400 on a credit card and the interest free period has run out. Rather than him getting another card (he's bloody useless with them!) could I transfer it to my card and he pay me?
I'm not sure, but I doubt I could transfer it to mine as it is different names (happy to be corrected though).
Could I pay the balance off using my card, sort of like an informal transfer?

Not really urgent or important. More a wondering than much else.

Thanks people :)

That will be fine. Credit card companies won't be bothered which card it comes from as long as they get paid. Do it as long as you trust your brother......

However, some of them (very few though) will be bothered which card their money goes to (i.e. transfer the balance only from the same person's card).

IIRC, Santander and Tesco CCs are at least two such cards.

Hi there, which one will be fine?

Doing an actual balance transfer my end, or just using the card to pay it off (if you understand what I mean)??

    Many thanks for the reply.

My brother has a Teco CC and mine is Halifax.

Is there a way I can find out?

    :)
  • Just phone and ask them. I've transferred several times between different cards.

You can only do a balance transfer to clear his card. You can't use your card to pay off his, similar to a card transaction which is what I think you were trying to say.

If you log into your Halifax account it will show you what balance transfer offers are available to you. I did a balance transfer from my partner's Tesco cc to my Halifax cc last year no problems. I called them up in case there were any issues with doing it online due to 2 different names on cards etc.

Just make sure you get your brother to set up a standing order to your bank account for whatever monthly amount you want him to pay to clear it.
