Domain name

Sorry if this is in the wrong place. I am in the process of setting up my own website, and need to choose a domain name. The one I have chosen has .uk, .co.uk and .com available. Which one is the best to use ? I am currently only selling to the UK, but may want to sell overseas at some point.

It really doesn't matter, .com tends to be more corporate and may put off UK customers, but in truth there is no difference apart from price.

  • Thanks for the advice. The .uk one is £5 more expensive than the .co.uk - is that one better ?

I prefer com, then co.uk (I have both)

Just my preference but not a fan of just uk at all.
  • Looks like I'll go for .co.uk then. Thanks for your help

Most of us go for all three to prevent someone else in the future riding your coat tails if the site becomes popular.

£5 is a fairly steep premium for .uk -v- .co.uk, 123-reg is £2.50+vat difference in price as per https://www.123-reg.co.uk/domain-names/cheap-domain-names.shtml
  • a lot of android devices have a .com button on the keyboard,
  • If I go for all three, how do I use them ? I have set up my website with EKM, and the co.uk is the one I have registered there.

You just go to the control panel(s) for the other domains and point them to your .co.uk hosting. Tech support for the other domains should be able to advise the correct process.

Just a thought ...... have you fully looked at the deal?

Have you just / about to, buy a domain name , or a deal with hosting?

Will you need a web site,
Will the Domain name company forward email on?

How much traffic do you expect ?

How much do the domain name company charge for transfers?

Just check a few bits and bobs out so that saving a few ££ does not cast you ££££ later

  • Did you order the domains through EKM too? If so this might help :

Make sure that you have a 301 forward, you don't want it to be an alias as you will effectively have a site on each domain.
