Tesco Delivery Saver - a little warning

I have just had a falling out with a Tesco Customer Service employee over the Delivery Saver plan.
I have shopped with Tesco for 30+ years and generally had good service. We moved to online shopping as our local Tesco is in-town and charge for parking. We signed up to the Delivery Saver Plan a few weeks ago as it made sense - we were 100% Tesco shoppers.
Anyway, after doing the shopping last week we noticed a charge on our account for £2 (before our shopping was delivered and charged for). We called up and were told it was a mistake and the money was refunded - fine.
Anyway, it happened this week too. Phoned Tesco and was spoken to live a naught infant and was even sighed at down the phone. Ultimately I was told it is a relatively new thing - the issue a £2 pending transaction when you place the order, and then charge you the full amount when the shopping leaves the store.
Yes, I was annoyed at the 'new' pending transaction policy (which I wasn't told about. But moreover I was shocked by the service from Tesco. Our shop staff are -in the most - good, and the delivery drivers are friendly, chatty and can't do enough to help.
Seriously thinking about leaving Tesco now - you just can't treat your loyal customers like this!

Item 1 in the Terms & Conditions now states "In order to help us validate your payment card, a pre-authorisation amount of £2 is reserved from your account automatically when you check out. Upon validation of this amount, checkout can continue. On the day of delivery, full authorisation takes place whereby the total amount is requested from your bank and the £2 pre-authorisation request removed."

Was that not in the Ts&Cs when you signed up? A pity that the first agent you contacted did not explain this.
I think that you will find that other supermarkets have a similar policy but perhaps for smaller amounts. ASDA,for example, reserves 1p.0 -

Tesco have done this for some time and most of the other supermarkets do the same thing.I’m a Senior Forum Ambassador and I support the Forum Team on Competitions Time, Shopping & Freebies boards, Employment, Jobseeking & Training boards If you need any help on these boards, do let me know. The pending policy is quite common but generally for a lot smaller amounts.Fashion on a ration 2025 0/66 coupons spent
79.5 coupons rolled over 4/75.5 coupons spent - using for secondhand purchases

I wonder if all these 'pending' £2 are included in Tesco's 'profits'......?
Might make them look like they have more money than they do?0 -

Even if the population of the UK shopped there every week £2 of pending transactions from each wouldn't reach the amount they managed from their Suppliers0 -
My issue isn't really with the authorisation it was with the service - that is where my annoyance is. Like someone else said, the first operator we spoke to didn't (as we have found out) have a clue. The second was beyond rude.
We finally found out (from the bank) that the authorisations on our account started a couple of weeks prior to the Delivery Saver being set up. Just bad timing helped cause confusion.0 -

I don't see the big deal tbh, I'd imagine the reason behind it is to ensure the card being used for payment is 'live' - we've used this delivery saver service for years with no problem around Payments...ORIGINAL MORTGAGE AMOUNT £106,454.00 (Started Sept 2007)
NOV 2021 O/S AMOUNT £1,694.41 OUR DEBT REDUCED BY £104,759.59 by std regular, over-payments & off-setting.
BofE +0.19% Tracker Repayment Offset Mortgage Discounted Sept 07-10 then increased to BofE +0.62% until 20270 -
This is nothing to do with Delivery Saver, they have always done it, they charge you the full amount but never collect the £2 and it returns to your account after about 10 days.
Asda do it for a £1 and Ocado do it for a £10 -
Asda do it for a £1 and ...
I don't know about ASDA Direct but, as I wrote above, for ASDA groceries it's 1p.
"In order to verify the debit or credit card details provided, we will contact your card issuer on the day you checkout your order to request a pre-authorisation of 1p. We will verify your card for 1p each time you amend your order. We will only take full payment after your shopping has been collected or delivered."
