Booking.com/ the hotel most likely will have already done a token authorisation to ensure it was a valid card. They can the use this authorisation to request the funds if the OP is a no show.
If this is correct why when I was issued a replacement card by Barclays did they tell me "as your card number has changed be sure to contact any company to which you have arranged a continuos payment"0 -

Sorry I've not read all the replies but heres what I do.
When you have the option of booking you can either "pay now" no cancellation or "pay on the day" with cancellation up till the day before. I always go for the latter (even though it's slightly more expensive) then if a cheaper deal comes up you can cancel and rebook the cheaper price perfectly legitimally. Alternatively if you book through the hotel they will often reduce the price accordingly as they would rather do that than lose a booking.
However if you choose the no cancelation (usually cheapest) option then you cant just not turn up, they may not take the money immediately but they expect to take it upon leaving the hotel hence they ask for you card details upfront.0 -

No... That purely depends on the cancellation policies of the specific booking you make. If you make a pay-on-arrival booking with, for example, a charge for one night if you cancel, then the hotel will contact Booking.com or whoever (assuming they haven't already been given your card details) and charge the night to your card.0 -

Yes there are various policies, I know how the system works but perhaps didn't explain myself very well, as I said I always go for "pay on arrival" with cancellation up to the day before whereby it can be cancelled with no charge up to the night before. Its usually slightly more expensive to have free cancellation included, but if booking a few months in advance often the price will drop at some point and it can be rebooked.0
