Hanging a heavy living room mirror

Hi

Have hung a heavy living room mirror up , it has rope at the back , so one point of `hang` if that makes sense , at the minute its hanging on a screw which is in a brown plug , i want to ensure safety and get a hook screw that can use the same plug , any ideas please

something like ?

    I'm sure that'll be fine.

I assume the wall is not plasterboard???

Or stick a large metal washer on the normal screw giving a better area to hang on

I doubt a hook will be any stronger than the screw you already have it hanging on.

When doubt , spread the load by first putting up a batten on the wall.

Your idea is sound , but only you know the weight of the mirror and the state of your walls. My mirror is 3'6 by 3' and is held up by four mirror clips, but I know the wall is very solid.

    thanks all

the wall is thick and sound , the mirror is 15kg approx 1.0 x 0.8 , but we have little ones , so wanted to be safe as possible

the washer is an excellent idea

It wasnt strength of more than the screw i was looking for , it was the hook part to stop it ever `sliding off`

I have a heavy mirror, I used 2 screws to spread the load rather than rely on one. I guess if one went it would probably not help much but seems safe enough.

I personally wouldn't be relying on one screw and plug, if you do make sure that the hole for the plug is the correct size, and that the screw used is the correct size for the plug.

I've got a large mirror hanging in my living room above a wall hung gas fire, the thing is big and heavy, 45kg plus

I've secured it using three of these http://www.screwfix.com/p/rawlplug-rawlbolt-eye-shield-anchors-m8-x-87mm-pack-of-5/95131

And also used several pieces of heavy duty cord, as opposed to just one length.

For obvious reasons I wanted to be sure the thing wasn't able to fall down and rip my gas fire off the wall, you may want to chuck a couple of redundancies in ;)

the thing with hooks is the distance they push the mirror out from the wall

I have a large over mantle mirror that came from john lewis and the fix points are in the frame so it is held by plugs and screws but the screw head drops into a slot in the frame so you have to lift it down rather than pull it off

for your fixing i would go for at least 2 screws about four or five inches in from the edge of the frame, large brown plugs and a good two inch number 12 screw, I like the idea of the loose washer on the screw so pull the washer to the front against the screw head and then the rope between the wall and washer so it has to go over the washer and the screw head to come off
