Duplicate Statement Fee

Hello,

I bank with Natwest. My June statement did not arrive so I called Natwest and they said they'd send it out again - it took a while but eventually arrived.

When my July statement arrived, I see I got charged £5 "Historic Statement Fee"

Ok - not the extreme charges discussed elsewhere in the forum, but I'm pretty unhappy about it! As I see it, Royal Mail lost my statement so why should I have to pay Natwest for their mistake?

Any advice? Are they likely to refund it if I make a fuss, or am I wasting my time? I guess £5, while still excessive, is probably not "unlawful"...

Cheers,
Dave

Why should Natwest have to do it for free either?

It's a service fee and you should pay it.

Complain to RM if you like.
  • You should not have been charged for a copy statement if you did not receive the original. I was about to agree with Mark, until I re read the post. I would politely enquire why you were charged for a copy of a statement that you had never received. I think they will refund.

I am sure you are right, NWSM, that they'll refund. But equally well I don't see why they should as they didn't lose it - the Post Office did.

if they were charging you then you should of been told at the time of ordering the duplicate statement. id ring them and ask them to refund it as a goodwill gesture.

if its possible maybe get an online account as it will eliminate the risk of loss in post, plus it better for the environment (except technically a PC has the same carbon footprint per hour as sheet of paper, but thats another story ;) ).

I've just signed for an online account view with Halifax today, i needed to check something urgent but they send the password in the post as well - so provided your postman isnt a thief or incompitent thats my suggestion.
I never missed a payment :T , I paid off all my credit cards :T , I paid of all my loans :T , i have a work mobile :T - but am now "medium" credit risk

    Mathmodave,
Part of Natwest's service is to provide you with a statement at agreed intervals, it is up to them to provide you with this.
If the method they use to provide this service fails, it's not your fault.
They should provide you free of charge a duplicate and address the problem of charges with the people THEY used.

It's not your problem and why should you get involved in chasing up the RM.
  • Thanks everyone! Most posts agree with what I was thinking.

I accept that Natwest has incurred a cost by having to send out the statement again (the paper, printing, the person I spoke to on the phone to request it, the stamp, the envelope etc.) but if Natwest want these back then they should claim from Royal Mail and not me.

I don't have a contract with RM so I don't expect much if I were to complain to them.

    Thanks again!

The bank should send you out a duplicate statement free of charge if you did not receive the original. If they wanted to claim anything back from Royal Mail because they lost it, that is up to them. If they can prove they posted it they can claim up to 100 times the price of a first class stamp from Royal Mail.

And a fiver to send out a couple of pieces of paper? At most £1.

Banks are making money out of everyone left right and centre !
  • Which is the point I was making, the bank DO send out duplicate statements when the original has not been received. Please can we get away from a nonsense debate. The OP should not have been charged for the statement because he had not received the original, PERIOD.

    hi all
i know this is a very old post
i requested a duplicate bank statement last tuesday morning, agreed to pay the £5. they said it takes 5-7 working days, ok fair enough then.
Today is the 7th working day excluding bank holiday monday and still no sign of my bank statement!
I actually rung them yesterday ie day 6 and all they told me was that it will come today and it didnt!
I'm just getting a bit annoyed coz i paid £5 for this service and need the statements to arrive by Monday for an appointment for something early Tuesday morning. and ps I requested bank statements from Birmingham and Midshires which was not only free, but arrived the following day!
