Because it was a slip of the tongue, he made a mistake in the heat of the moment. Energy firms were briefed of this before it was announced.

He was supposed to say 'tell customers of the cheapest tariff' not 'give customers the cheapest tariff'.

As he is PM and the subject is a vote winner he didn't want to admit the mistake so just ignored it hoping it would go away.

As expressed above you can't move someone on to the cheapest tariff without their consent as you will lock them into cancellation fees.

Suppliers are now providing a personalised quote on the front page of each bill, annual statement and price increase letter telling customers on if they could save money by swapping tariffs. The onus is still on the customer to start the switch though.
Finally! I was starting to think all common sense had been sucked out of the forum.

    Correct more or less

DC said he would legislate to force the companies to put customers on the cheapest tariff.
DC made a mistake, what you are talking about is a completely unworkable system that would cause hellish problems for millions of customers. It'll never ever happen.

Nice try, but he reiterated the position 24 hours later.

    Read the article ;)

Oh I've had plenty of opportunity to do that. I see you even posted it twice.

Still doesn't change my response to you.

Not sure how reiterating his position (one you claim was originally made in error in the heat of the moment) the next day is aligned to your suggestion "he had made a mistake and hoped it would go away"

Surely not even you would decide who you wnated to govern you based on a single policy of that party?

What I am demonstrating here is the ongoing failngs of the current goverment to abide by the commitments they make.

In fact, even the Speaker of the House appeared totally dissatisfied, and in an extraordinary attack on the present government (regarding their latest U-turn on the commitment to have a vote on the European Arrest Warrant)
I'm sorry, is this a politics board?

I bought a new build, moved in at the end of June. EON current supplier. Knew I probably wasn't on the cheapest tariff, thought I'd worry about it later. Then my bill came...shockingly I wasn't on the cheapest tariff, so I switched. Could have switched sooner, just didn't bother.

Really not sure what OP thinks EON have done wrong...

    Not even me? Huh?

Of course I'm not going to choose who I govern me on the basis of a single policy. That's why I prefaced my statement with "And if you're going to place your X on the basis of energy policy....."

    Hi Idiophreak

Hope the move went well and you're now settled in your new home.

Looks like you're sorted but hope some of the information I posted above is of use. Let me know if I can help further.
