Anglian Double Glazing

I have a large detached house which needs the windows and doors replacing. 17 windows including a small bay(one front panel and 2 sides) + front and side door. Anglian Home Improvements were in the area, so I entertained a salesman.

After several hours of discussions and measuring we agree a price of £12k(started at £37K). Happy with price but steer away from the finance. Would have been committed for a year at 1.69% interest per month.

I have been advised to fit Anglians silver mist glass to the half glazed front and back doors as well as the bathroom and toilet windows. There was a lot of other choice with textured/patterned glass. Has anyone got any comments on the silver mist glass.

I am also advised that top openers are not the way to go nowadays and to be fair I very rarely use them on the existing windows. All the windows are specced with side openers with vents in kitchen, bathroom and toilet. Does this sound reasonable.

Any comments appreciated - I am living between Dartmouth and Salcombe, near the South Devon coast.

  • The fact they started at 37 then came down to 12 is the first reason I would not touch them. They supply average quality windows at best and whether you get a good fitter is a lottery. Find a local independent on recomendation.

So true... could you believe what the fitters tell you?

"We're fitting AA+ windows... these A windows will... your B-rated glazing has arrived.... ..... Nah, that's clingfilm in those...."
  • Yes, double glazing sales techniques have been a cliche for decades but sales has nothing to do with the qualities of the physical product or the bottom line negotiated on cost. Local firms in the South Hams are regrettably not the safe retreat they might be in other areas of the country.

Does anyone have an opinion on the use of silver mist glass and no top openers as described in my first post.

The glass choice is personal preference and would depend who you go to for your windows -you would be given a choice from what they offer .

Regarding top openers, one trend for the last 15 years has been towards easy clean and egress windows. That means side hung windows with a big enough opening width for fire escape. Of course this also depends on the height of your window cills and whether this is a concern to you. But it would help future proof your home.

    Thanks for the reply Furts.

As you correctly surmise the windows are all egress hinged. Window heights are 120 - 140cm with cast concrete cills that will be staying. I like the concept of future proofing.

I am reasonably confident that the silver mist glass will be fine for the bathroom/toilet windows but less so with regards to the two half glazed doors. If anyone has already installed this type of glass in a door or window would really appreciate an in situ picture.

    Thanks

Regrettably it looks like my arrangement with Anglian Windows is going to end before it really started.
The surveyor came out on 24th November and spent over three hours measuring up. He took a sample of the first floor window upper window trim which we both decided was asbestos cement and not a problem. It's a 1970 house so the upper trim in line with the soffit boards is likely to be asbestos cement sheet.

Received a letter from Anglian yesterday, rejecting the order on the basis that the soffit is asbestos. Their way forward is for me to additionally place an order for soffit, fascia and gutter replacement with them which would also include employing a specialist company to remove the asbestos. Their independent check of the material by Environtec found the material to be insulation board containing both white asbestos(Chrystotile) and brown asbestos(Amosite). The alternatives are to renegotiate to fit the doors/windows unaffected by this asbestos cement or to refund the balance of my deposit. I am hoping the 'balance of my deposit' means my deposit in its entirety.

Expecting a call from the local Paignton showroom to discuss but my own feelings are that the asbestos cement, identified in the survey should not cause a problem as not being disturbed to any extent.
Will ask them to perform to the original remit or refund.
    Any thoughts?

I work in the construction industry. You have received a lucky escape. No consumer should ever deal with Anglian Windows. You now have that opportunity to look for a genuine, ideally small, local company to meet your needs.

  • Have used Interframe, Paignton and Curwell Windows, Teignmouth. Both proved reliable.
