Vibration from upstairs neighbours washing machine broke my ktichen bulb?

As on more that it just shortened the life of the bulb, its one of those large tube types, and the whole reason for me asking is since she got a new washing machine about 3 months ago everytime it goes on a final spin it makes one corner of the light socket rattle loudly, and she can use the machine as much as 6 times a day and in summer about 8 times a day, I did notice in past that the light in the corner where it rattles looked a bit dimmer and had a gap compared to other edge.

Today I had it on for a while and it was no problem, then all of a sudden I heard the ceiling rattle from the washing machine and seconds later the light bulb died.

I know they can die at random but it just seems strange all the problems I have been having with it have always been when shes using the washing machine.

Just asking if its possible, and would it be silly to mention it to her not asking for a contribution or anything but letting her be aware in case I buy a new one and have the same problem.

Why not buy her this and offer to help her install it...problem solved.

I know it's £20, but IMO it's a small price to pay not to have your celling rattling every hour.

Great idea above. Plus ask/suggest she use a slower spin speed? Some machines have totally unecessarily fast speeds.......

Is it 6 times everyday? Or just some days? They're not running a laundry service are they?

  • Sorry GM but if they live in a flat, and don't want to be blamed for causing condensation damp.., as high as spin as you can buy (depending on fabric type being washed) is necessary. Even condenser tumble dryers give off some moisture content and god forbid they should dry clothes inside the flat lol.

Personally, I'd be wondering about the support for the upstairs floor/OP's ceiling. It should be able to cope with a tumble dryer, even at 1600 speed. The washing machine could have not been levelled though, causing it to wobble more than it should.

You could try your LL if there is any sign of damage (cracks etc to your ceiling.

Or they haven't taken out the transport bolts.

Or, as I have seen once, the concrete counter weight was removed.

Some washing machines are just not that great. We had a washer dryer that shook the whole kitchen once, our current washing machine barely moves even on maximum spin.

I would go up and have a chat, they are probably oblivious to what is happening. 6 times a day seems excessive, unless this is only once a week on washing day.

These mats are very easy to install, and once in place require no maintenance.
I'll put away those spanners then. :)

Six or eight spin cycles a day doesn't necessarily mean six or eight loads - it may well be one or two loads, with three or four spin cycles.

It may well be unbalanced (many people don't understand how important it is to be balanced, and level), it may be resting against a wall, it may have the transport bolts still fitted, and it may just be a cheap and nasty machine.

I assume you've already introduced yourself to all your neighbours and shared a cup of tea before there is any problem.

If not, just go on and visit, as friendly as possible, and see if there's any obvious solution.

I spoke to her about 6 weeks ago when I woke up one morning to find my kitchen flooded and the ceiling soaked, neighbour said there was no sign of leaks in her flat just mentioned how her LL did a shoddy job and the previous tenants of my flat left as the bathroom and bedroom were flooded before from her boiler meaning my LL had to redecorate

She did say then that she put in the machine herself and she didnt think she put the balance screws in right.

And yes its 6-8 times a day every day, I know she is on sickness benefits so she may have a health condition I do knot know about and seems to go to bed around 4am every day wake up at about 8am but is pretty much silent apart from this, at most you hear her walking about her bedroom as its above mine and the floorboards are creaky.

Could u possibly say that you are able to hear the machine and from the sound, you are wondering if its properly balanced and maybe you could help? She might well leap at the chance.

I had to replace my washing machine, which well, thank god no one lived below me (in a house) as it was breaking for a second time, and erm suprised I didn't have noise police at my door during the day let alone evening! New machine is wonderful lol. I made sure it was properly balanced as I am pretty sure the old one wasn't (lots going on on move in day) and this probably contributed to bearing failure. It was placed in such a way that I couldn't drag it out again to balance it and couldn't get at the adjusters either. It was so bad, in a previous house I was literally stood in front of the machine, bearing down on it to try and stop it jumping across the room. Kindof hilarous in retrospect, but I truly got to hate that darned WM!

I've a washing machine I daren't use as I used it once and it shook so much .... I'll try one of those mats, although I can't fit it as I can't move the machine as it's too heavy for little me.... but at least I can now see a solution that doesn't involve ripping out the whole kitchen floor (which I was considering) to try to solve the fact the entire kitchen and everything in it shakes when the machine's on.
