Does anyone know if the max speed on a space saver tyre is a legally enforceable speed or just meant as a guideline?

  • I wouldn't fancy having someone behind me on the motorway at 70mph with a space saver on...

Hence the word "MAX" on it.

    It's European law.

It come under the same law as your example of an illegal tyre because it has a nail in it. I will leave you to think about it for a while.

Just wondered. It has a sticker attached saying "max 80kph", yet the speed rating is "M" which would imply a max speed of 81 mph.

They seem to be limited to 50 mph by virtue of section 26(5) of the
Road Vehicles (Construction and Use) Regulations 1986.
  • If you fit 2 front or rear you might be ok for 81, but with only one on, surely it's different tyre sizes on same axle?

So would probably fail an MOT too?

The full spec of the tyre includes the letter 'T' - as in

    CST-17 135/80 17 T 92M

The speed rating is a theoretical maximum figure.

The T means it is a temporary fitment coming within the rules for these tyres which is -

    ECE Regulation 64:

So I would hazard a guess that it is a legally enforceable limit.

    That makes sense.

Depends on the type of spacesaver. There are the slim donuts that are limited to 50mph/80kph and there are the fatter ones in some markets for up to 80mph.

If it's a different size from the others, it's still limited to 50 in the UK.
