Accidental Missed Payment Halifax Card

Hi Guys.

I have checked my Halifax Mastercard statement this morning and was alarmed to discover that I had a missed payment notification on my credit card.

I was under the impression that I had setup a DD on my account to make the minimum payment each month and am confident I have a letter at home confirming this. (I will check this evening)

I have spoken with Halifax this morning and they have no record of me having a DD. They have accepted that this was a genuine mistake and are refunding my late payment fee and have assured me that this will not affect my credit score as I have made a payment within 30 days of the due date.

If I do have the letter confirming my DD is it worth pursuing with the bank as I am still concerned over my credit score being affected as I am due to remortgage in the next 18 months.

Any advice would be great

Thanks

you would need to see if a late payment marker appears on your credit file and then ask them to remove it. Although they seem to have implied that there will not be one
  • Thanks Caz

How would I check this? by asking them? I am going to call their card services department later to ensure my interest rate offers arent affected. I was advised to do this by the adviser I spoke to this morning.

    Thanks

it would seem more rational to check whether or not you do have a DD set up before embracing a load of assumptions / questions

if you have a DD set up it should show on the Halifax CC statement and presumably on your own banking systems

The statement would clearly state if there were plans to take any amount by DD.

It's your responsibility to ensure at least the minimum payment is made on time.

However, we all make mistakes, so if this was the first default charge you have received in the last 12 months, it would be worth speaking with the card issuer (nicely) and explaining the mistake you have made and requesting if they will consider waiving the default charge. I'm sure they will :)

Unless you are currently on a promotional rate, then interest rates should not be affected.

If you are on a promotional rate/deal, then certainly also request that that continues despite your mistake, if they agree to waiver the default charge. :)
  • Thanks Clapton, I have just checked my online banking again and my statements for June, July, August & September ll have clear instructions that a DD payment will be taken that month. As I also make manual payments I dont think these DD's have been taken as my minimum payment has already been met.

On my October & Nov statements there is no mention of the DD so it appears to have been cancelled for some reason. As I made no manual payment during this period, My payment due on 8th Nov has not been paid until today.

I was told by the Halifax advisor this morning that they had no record of me having a DD so that is a little worrying.

How do you suggest I should proceed? As it stands i was assured my Credit Score will not be affected and they are happy to refund my late payment charge. I dont want to get into a whole series of letters/telephone calls if this scenario is not going to have a negative affect on my financial affairs.

    Thanks

You could contact your bank and ask them on what basis the DDI that was valid earlier in the year has been cancelled ;)

If you want to pay by DD in future, you could ask the credit card provider to set up a new arrangement :)
  • I have already set up a new DD therefore im not concerned about future payment.

My main concern is my credit rating and how this may be affected through no fault of my own.

Basically I dont trust Halifax saying that my credit score will not be affected.

How long have you been making these manual payments for? If it's for 13 months or more that might explain the problem. Most banks will cancel direct debits if they aren't used, i.e. if no payments are made, for 13 months. So if you've paid manually for a long time and the d/d has never been claimed, it could well have been cancelled.
  • The DD was set up in June so that shouldn't be the problem.

    Thanks
