No cold water tap for washing machine?

Options
Hi

Ive just moved in to a rented house and i plumbed in the washing machine to the only available point, but on the first wash yesterday i noticed its actually a hot water tap and i have a cold water only machine.

I was under the impression you got cold taps only but never hot taps only? Can someone clear this up for me please because Im hoping the landlord has to install a cold tap rather than i buy a hot water only machine (do those even exist?!)

Thanks in advance

Are you sure it's not just a red isolator tap put on a cold feed when it should be a blue one ?

Most ( all ?? ) machines these days are cold-water fill. You can find any number of discussions about it, but the upshot is, it's more economical.

Are you sure it's a hot water tap ? Or is it actually a cold water pipe with the wrong coloured tap on it ?

But if it is hot water then I'd be asking the landlord to get a cold tap installed. It's not a difficult job if there are cold water pipes nearby.
  • The coloured tap bit has come off, i had to use pliers to open it. It appears to be coming directly out of the boiler (washing machine is directly beneath) and the hose feels very hot when the mahine was running

In that case I'd ask if the landlord can get a cold tap installed.

Although, if you say the pipe is coming directly from the boiler, and it's a short run, you won't actually be wasting all that much energy. And it's not going to damage your machine.

The only problem would be, if for instance you're doing a 30 degree wash, and the incoming water is hotter than that. You'll be using water that's hotter than it needs to be, which is a waste, but more importantly, if your clothes can only withstand 30 degrees then it could spoil them.

So yes, I'd ask for a cold feed to be installed. As I said, it's not a big job, it's not going to cost much, and I don't think it's an unreasonable request :)
  • Thank you so much, ill post a picture when i get home just to make sure, my knowledge is pretty limited on these things, but inguess you learn more with problems!

Follow the pipework along a bit further - does it go to the hot tap??

Only if the machine has an internal thermostat. If it just heats the water for a fixed amount of time based on the program it's running, then heating pre-heated water could result in damage or some kind of steam explosion. I don't want to cause panic, but it is something to be aware of.

Yeah check as Ruski says. Just because it goes to the boiler doesn't mean its hot. Could just branch off the boilers cold feed.

If the landlord is not interested self cutting taps are easy to fit.
    - Not with limited knowledge they aren't and a !!!!!! if you get them wrong :o
