MK 6 2009 VW Golf 2.0 TDi engine just cut out
I am seriously starting to request 'investing' such a hefty sum in a car I thought it would be reliable ...
Last year the air conditioning failed just outside of warranty and VW wanted £1k to fix.
Now engine just stopped with no rhyme or reason. Thought it was something to do with the relay as this was humming. Having replaced that the problem persists. Engine fires then promptly cuts out. A mechanic has plugged in his computer which apparently can't communicate with my ECU ... He did seem to be able to get it to run by bypassing the relay ....
Please can anyone offer any help/advice as I know nothing about cars and fear VW will ask another hefty sum to resolve. I am now car less

Sounds like the mechanic you are using doesnt have the right equipment. Nor would i be bypassing any relays as he doesnt know what harm that could be doing.
Find a GOOD VW specialist - there are plenty about.
I would also suspect you could have got the aircon sorted for a fraction of that. Also what was the problem? I would have thought if your car had a FVWSH VW would have made a significant contribution.
Golfs are no more reliable than other brands BTW. I've a 2012 one and its had a water pump and an entire engine wiring loom and before it had even hit 40K miles (fortunately all under warranty)0 -
Depends on the garage you buy from too. I had a mechanical issue with my mini which just went out of warranty but the dealer made a call direct to BMW and didn't charge me.
How far out of warranty was your Golf?
My brother has had 3 Golfs in 12 years, maybe more; 1 new and 2 2nd hand. I have to admit they've been very reliable but we are lucky that we have a great mechanic. A dealer would probably work out more expensive to sort your issue out so I'd maybe ask around for a good mechanic.
Best of luck0 -
Read lots about EGR faults on these golfs. The fact you say the car fires up then cuts out would steer me away from a main power supply relay (to the ecu). Get it to a specialist with quality diagnostic equipment (probably more than a snap on scanner) to see if they can get any further0
