iPad 2 - freezes

I posted a few months ago about problems with my iPad. I took it to a Genius Bar a few weeks ago, 15 majors found where they would normally expect just 1, apparently. It was reset to factory settings. I came home, connected to my PC and reloaded. All ok for a couple of days. It is now back to being slow and freezes. This is my 4th time of writing this as iPad freezes and I have to start again once released and working again! Very annoying! I have a lot of photos on it which if I delete may help?? IS there a quick-ish way of deleting and once done will they still stay on my PC as I don't want to lose completely.

JL offering 3yr guarantee until 26th November so seriously considering buying an Air 2. I have 64gb but wonder if it would be worth getting 125. I don't know anyone who has upgraded to Air2 though so would welcome any reviews of any who have on here.

Thanks very much for advice and help! :)

Do you actually need all the photos on the Ipad itself .

I am up to date and using IOS 8.1.
My storage is 20.1gb used, 37gb available.
My iCloud is more or less full. No room for backup.

As for majors - he plugged my iPad into his device where it showed these majors/errors. He explained it was little parts of apps which had broken off. I should have delved further but he knows what he's doing so I went along with it as I haven't a clue!

I don't download programmes. I do watch YouTube but not a lot and don't download from there either. Hence it has to be 1000's of photo's I have!

No I don't. However I don't want to lose the vast majority of them but would like to simplify the volume I have on it. Hence my question if I make sure my PC is updated with them, can I then delete them from my iPad and next time I sync PC with iPad they won't delete from PC and won't return to iPad? Absolute idiot here with what happens when syncing! :o:silenced:

    !

I put money on that being your problem! The iPad 2 is old tech now and has an A5 chip - the same as the iPad Mini and iPhone 4S... when iOS 8 first came out I put it on my 4S and it slowed down and was unbearable to use... I very quickly put it back on iOS 7.1.2 and it is running like a dream again now. The Apple Store will never admit that this is the problem as they have signed iOS 8 off as being compatible with A5 chipped devices when there is a lot of anecdotal evidence around the web that begs to differ.

So if you have 39Gb available to use... what exactly do you think your 1000s of photos are doing that you don't want them to do??? You have loads of space available on the device!

So that means I am stuck with iOS 8.1 if that is causing the problems doesn't it, downhillfast?

I don't need to do anything with the photos that are on here. I just thought they were causing the problems and I should downsize the quantity I am storing. Also my iCloud says it can't backup because there isn't any room.

If you are right though and the 8.1 is causing the problems then the photo's aren't slowing it down. Does it mean hopefully when the next upgrade comes it may right the problems? What a pain!! :(

It is driving me mad so I may just end up buying the Air2 64gb and give this one to my 5 year old grandchild to use with the games she plays! Simple but expensive solution if this can't be sorted out.
    Thanks .
  • What do you mean by you connected to the PC and reloaded? Do you mean you copied the files from backup. If the backup was corrupt then you'll see the same problems again. Best to download the files again.

As Handsome90 says... if you just took it home and 'restored from backup' then you may well have reintroduced the 'majors!' that are causing this problem.

What you need to do is plug your ipad into your PC and copy all of the photos into a folder (you could maybe use this opportunity to discard any pics you don't want, although not necessary as you do have enough space for all of them) Once you are confident that you have all the pics you want saved in a folder ON YOUR PC then you can reset the ipad to factory settings again. It might also be worth writing down what apps you have installed as once you reset it, any that don't come as standard will be lost.

Once your ipad is reset you should open itunes (with ipad connected to PC obviously!) and 'set up as new ipad'. Go through the motions of inputting all of your passwords, settings etc You should use your existing Apple ID so that you can access all of your paid for apps etc! ...and once all that's done then you can copy your photos back to the ipad using the 'photos' tab in itunes.

Doing this will ensure you have a clean install.

My IPad 2 is certainly much slower since IOS 8.1was downloaded.

Have you or any else any idea how I revert to IOS 7 please?

It was possible to downgrade to 7.1.2 for a short while after ios8 was released but that window has now closed unfortunately.
